fun & informative

Format: Paperback

As an interpreter, I work with the many ways words, phrases and sentences are used. I was hoping this book had some fresh insights and observations about linguistics in everyday life. I was happy to see that it does.

I especially liked the historical descriptions of the evolution of English over many centuries, and the variations among different English-speaking nations. The book is biased towards the UK perspective of English, but that's fair for this language and its history - I felt it made the book even better.

I also enjoyed the format of short chapters, many of which include a game or quiz to challenge your understanding of English and its uses.

I plan to recommend this book to colleagues and friends. Thank you!
