Eddie Murphy brings his smart-talking, funny, and sly character Axel Foley back for more adventures in Beverly Hills Cop II, the sequel to the immensely popular Beverly Hills Cop. The usual suspects are back, including Judge Reinholt as Rosewood and John Ashton as Taggart, and there are some new faces, too, notably Paul Reiser (Mad About You) as the Detroit detective Friedman. Foley's old buddy, Detective Bogomil (Ronny Cox), is shot by a sniper while jogging. Foley arrives from Detroit to help figure out what happened. When it becomes apparent that Bogomil was on the trail of solving a series of robberies dubbed the "Alphabet Crimes," Foley, Rosewood, and Taggart take it upon themselves to solve the crimes and bring down the criminals.
Beverly Hills Cop II, like its predecessor, is full of funny insults and clever tricks, mostly delivered by the incomparable Murphy. The hapless Rosewood is given another side here--he's revealed as a pistol-packing plant-loving goof who carries double-barreled shotguns and automatic weapons in his car trunk ("You can't have enough fire power!" he explains). Although his part is small, Paul Reiser gets a few good scenes in, and the boys even confront the bad guys at the Playboy Mansion, with some help from none other than Hugh Hefner. --Shannon Gee
