CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF A GREAT NATION. Before Europeans set foot on these shores, Native Americans lived in harmony with all that surrounded them. Steeped in myth and tradition, they epitomize the extraordinary relationship between the people, the land and all living creatures. Native Americans still hold sacred the ways of ancestors--their legendary survival skills, striking artistry and unique customs. And now we have all come to appreciate their unique contribution to America. Indians Of The Plains. A father and son find an arrowhead as they work together to repair their ranch fence. As they continue, the father tells the son stories about the old people who came here long ago and how they followed the buffalo to provide food, shelter, clothing and tools. At first they followed on foot and later on horses, which became the Indians most prized possession. Indians Of the Southwest. Of the many Southwestern tribes, the Navajos are famed for their mythical relationship with nature which is dramatically displayed in their daily lives and remarkable craftworks. The elders keep the traditions alive for the children and often the teacher is their grandmother, who is dedicated to preserving the place where "Father sky marries Mother earth and gives birth to the children." For this is who the Navajos are. Indians Of California. The Yokuts were the largest tribe to inhabit the land we now call California. Known for their practical and resourceful ways, they had a great respect for their bountiful food supply and the land that it came from. A Yokut grandmother tells her grandchildren about their customs and we see what they took to preserve the delicate balance between man and nature. "Learn its secrets well and this land will give you everything you need," she says. "This is the way we have always done it, the way the old people taught us."
