This is a relatively unknown book to the masses, however one who would read & contemplate this book under the Grace of a Master would find great leaps in their progress to know & sustain the experience of absolute reality. A clear seeker will recall one's meditative experiences through the reading. There is no dogma here. Only The Truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars science of awareness/consciousness/sentience, April 14, 2005
By cozplay (Grass Valley, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Siva Sutras: The Yoga of Supreme Identity (Paperback)
I've already worn through several copies and have recently received a new copy (through the wonder of Amazon) of this sometimes hard-to-find book.
When I first looked at this book I almost disregarded it because it was prefaced with a blessing from Swami Muktananda from whom I hadn't gotten very good vibrations. But I continued on and got very different vibrations from the rest of the book. I was delighted to find what seemed to be a genuine spiritual classic presented superbly: a brilliant highly informative introduction, a handy overview summary of the sutras(verses), each sutra presented in original Sanskrit with accompanying transliteration and with high quality English translation with lots of notes, a very informative and insightful exposition, a very helpful and well done glossary, a small subject index, an extensive index to key Sanskrit terms, and an index to the sutras in alphabetical Sanskrit.
I don't know of anyone who I would consider to be a master of the Siva(Shiva)Sutras (with the exception of legendary and mythological figures such as Padma Sambhava), but I feel that Jaideva Singh is a highly advanced student and brings the light of advanced yogic realization to this translation along with a marvelous gift for being able to bridge the gap between ancient Sanskrit and modern English, between the subtle sublimities of high Saivite philosophy and the cultural mind-set of the modern English speaking world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Divinely-Inspired Treasure Box of Transcendental Wisdom., July 7, 2002

A word of warning for all newcomers to the Shaivite world:-

You should not expect to be able to assimilate even the minutest fraction of this sacred text if you have scant karmic affinity with, and/or prema for Divine Lord Shiva. And, to get the most out of this book, you should also have some familiarity with kundalini yoga terminology and the Saivagama teachings. Otherwise, you will be floundering in wave after wave of obscure terminologies and concepts.

The Siva Sutras were bestowed on Sri Vasugupta of Kashmir by Lord Mahadeva himself. Here, in this present edition, they come wedded with Sri Ksemaraja's expert Vimarsini commentary. The compiler Jaideva Singh was a pupil of Lakshman Joo - the last comtemporary doyen of Trika Saivism - and as such this book is a pure distillation of the foundational teachings of the Trika sect. The repeated study of these 77 aphorisms along with Ksemaraja's commentaries can only foster growing respect for the Siva Sutras being an authoritative compendium of vital yogic techniques which lead one to Final Moksha, or absorption in Siva-Consciousness --- the original source and final resting-place of every jiva/sentient being.

Thus, should you approach these Sutras with adequate preparation and sincere bhakti(devotion), you might just forge from your understanding of them your very own unique path to salvation.

Aum Namah Sivaya
