Format: Hardcover
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'A look at the conduct of war in the wider “Roman” world during Late Antiquity (c. A.D. 285-650). The essays in these volumes, by some two dozen scholars from several countries, further the contemporary trend toward refuting the old notion that this a period of Roman military degeneracy.

'The first volume opens with an overview of the nature of war in the period, including varying interpretations and a number of controversies, and concludes, “There is no evidence that the Early Roman legionary army to the Late Roman army involved any major dissolution of military effectiveness or training.” Eight essays follow reviewing the literature on various aspects of the subject (e.g., “Military Equipment and Weaponry,” “Tactics,” “Strategy, Diplomacy, and Frontiers,” “Fortifications in Africa,” etc.).

'The second, weightier volume, has nineteen essays in eight categories (e.g., “Fortifications and Siege Warfare,” “Literary Sources and Topography,” “The Balkans,” “Civil War,” etc.). These cover topics like Roman and “Barbarian” military equipment, analyses of ancient histories, intelligence and “info war,” logistics, modern views of several campaigns, military archaeology, and so forth, and include “Recreating the Late Roman Army,” on the use of reenacting as a tool in helping us understand the period. Invaluable for the serious student of the Roman military, even the more casual reader may also find many of these essays of interest.'

Format: Hardcover
The greatest advantage of this book is that it includes a great deal of information that is useful both for those new to the topic and those who are already specialists. The first volume consists of "bibliographical essays" which are basically summaries of the state of the knowledge available now. Chapter topics include source studies, military equipment, tactics, organization, strategy, and three chapters on the fortifications of the East, West, and North Africa. These are useful overviews in general, but what really places them on another level is the bibliographical component of it. The bibliographies at the end of each sub-chapter include excellent lists of the best books on the topic, with the in-text citations providing a handy summary of their contents. If you are looking for further sources then this book is an essential starting point.

Volume two is by far the larger and contains what were originally papers on various military-related topics. As with all such books these articles can be a bit hit-and-miss depending on what your topic is. I found the chapters on the archaeology of war particularly useful for example, but had less interest in the one on the monkey buried in the Pyrenees. In general I suppose that the topics are more useful than your average specialist collection, and there is enough variety that it can cover a reasonable range of topics. There has been an effort to provide an overarching structure to them by placing them in groups and giving general chapters for each region. The broad categories provide a good structure with sections on strategy and intelligence, fortifications and siege warfare, military equipment, literary sources and topography, civil war, and three regional chapters on the East, West, and Balkans.
