Biography

The Blues Brothers are an American blues/soul band born as characters developed by comedians Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi for a musical sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1978. The concept developed into a real band and the duo released a double-platinum album Briefcase Full Of Blues in 1978. By 1980, the star-strewn Blues Brothers film appeared, and became a firm favourite.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Of all the side projects cooked up by former cast members of Saturday Night Live, none had the creative legs of the Blues Brothers. Two whiteboy blues enthusiasts fronting the best band money could buy, the project spawned a hit movie and a No. 1 album (the debut, Briefcase Full of Blues). It also helped revive the moribund careers of revered heroes such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. What Belushi and Ackroyd lacked in technique--a lot, really--they made up for with enthusiasm and devotion to the music. The 20-track Definitive Collection compiles their best material, including "Soul Man," and "Who's Making Love," and "Rubber Biscuit." It's hardly the best blues album you'll ever buy, but there's plenty here to make you get up and shake your tailfeather. --Daniel Durchholz

5.0 out of 5 stars RIGHTEOUS "BROTHERS", October 26, 2005
By Jukebox Dave (RECORD TOWN, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blues Brothers - The Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Yeah, I know, i know...Brother Jake has long gone to that great greasy roadhouse in the sky. Granted, the Blues Brothers, especially today, are more a product than a real band. True, even when they WERE an actual working unit, all the roots-purist detractors claimed their brand of blues was about as authentic as a near-beer. But damn it all, these cool cats introduced me to the likes of Sam and Dave, Junior Wells, Solomon Burke, and countless other RNB masters when I was just a naive teen hopelessly hooked on KISS and Meat Loaf. Maybe John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were no Ray Charles or Little Walter in the vocal and harp departments respectively, but they had heart 'n soul to spare and were shrewd enough to surround themselves with living legends of the musical world. The Stax studio dream team of former MG's Steve "The Colonel" Cropper and Duck Dunn, plus Matt "Guitar" Murphy, were legitmate old pros on beloved standards like RIOT IN CELL BLOCK #9, WHO'S MAKIN' LOVE, SWEET HOME CHICAGO, GOIN' BACK TO MIAMI and HEY BARTENDER. Most important of all, hearing these renditions made me want to check out the originals, which of course, have never been bested. So, Jake and Elwood, for introducing me to my first musical love, the blues, a heartfelt thank-you. You will forever remain Brothers in my soul. RATING: FIVE FEDORAS

5.0 out of 5 stars Good memories, good times, good music!!!, September 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Blues Brothers - The Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
How can anyone not love this stuff? Well, maybe the young kids would roll their eyes but they just don't get it.

I watch the movie every time I see that it is on. But oddly enough, I just purchased the music for the first time recently and have listened to it ALOT, it brightens up those 45 minute, stuck-in- traffic mornings. With this collection, you get 20 of 35 BB cuts and that isn't bad. Want you do not get is not missed because all the best is on this one CD.

Also, recommended is the new BB 2000 soundtrack. The movie is so-so, some funny moments (Belushi is sorely missed), but the music is wonderful. Pick up both if you get the chance!

5.0 out of 5 stars It really is a definitive collection, September 28, 1998
By facls@uol.com.br (Sao Paulo, Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blues Brothers - The Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Excellent collection of Blues Brothers songs. All of their hits are here, from a live show and from the Blues Brothers soundtrack. Difficult to choose a favorite, but Soul Man, Who's Making Love, Expressway To Your Heart, and Everybody Needs Somebody To Love are classics. And their jam Sweet Home Chicago shows how great a band they are. A must buy!!
