About the Artist

Each performance by Bob Green weaves together the musical strands of 20 years as a performing artist. With traditional musics of the Americas as a foundation, Bob's interests and experience also include Celtic, Jazz and Classical music.

Based in New York City, he performs and records on violin, mandolin, guitars and bass in a wide range of settings, including musical theater, string and country bands, Irish and Klezmer groups, folk and bluegrass festivals, and the New York Mandolin Orchestra.

Theater credits include Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way at the Irish Repertory Theater, Prophets and Heroes with Vanessa Redgrave, and musical direction of Buffalo Gals at the Bennington (VT) Center for the Arts. He received a 1995 Meet The Composer Award for the modern dance composition Face to Face.

Music has taken him to 11 countries and 23 states, including a tour of Japan with composer/banjoist Akira Satake who he assisted with a recently released album on Alula Records. His most recent overseas trip was to Jordan and Israel, as accompanist to folksinger/harpman Saul Broudy. He performed at Carnegie Hall with the Clef Club Orchestra, at Lincoln Center with Hazel Dickens, at the Lone Star RoadHouse with Shawn Colvin, and has played at Symphony Space, Town Hall, and the Bottom Line.

Before living in New York, he made his home in the Ohio/Kentucky area, working with Harley Allen (Folkways records). Prior to that, he did stints in a variety of New England bluegrass and folk acts, including Raintree (Green Mountain Records), and The Valley Partners (Old Homestead Records).

Audio Magazine called him "... an incredibly versatile mandolinist whose mastery of a number of styles is matched by his infectious enthusiasm." BAND_MEMBERS: Jeff Waxman - Piano, Rob Stein - Guitar, Jeff Berman - Drums, Barry Kornhauser - Guitar, Diane Sanabria - Banjo, Peter Stan - Accordion

Product Description

There is something which ties together all the musical styles I love, but I haven't figured out what it is yet. I try to play in settings which are more or less hospitable to my instruments, but most importantly, I am drawn to living and breathing traditions, with active links to the past, the present, and, with any luck, the future. I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I do, and that they bring you to other times and places. I'll meet you there!

5.0 out of 5 stars A sense of musical place & time..., April 19, 2000
By A Customer
Bob Green can certainly be proud of his work here. This recording was a surprise in that it put me back in touch with so much of the music I heard as a child at neighborhood and family gatherings. As often happens when listening to a new recording, there are various stages through which songs move as we listen to them again and again. I found that all of these pieces were very refreshing on first listen and over time began unfolding to reveal their depths (and those of the musicians).

This eclectic group of folk songs are meant to convey a sense of place or origin and the interpretations will certainly take you there so be prepared to travel. No doubt Bob Green's love of this music had a say in the matter. Also, the acoustic nature of this music invites you to really listen to the fine musicianship and how well the instrumentation lends itself to the nature of these songs.

Having so many different "flavors" to choose from was truly refreshing. For those of you who like Celtic or Irish music, watch for Tobin's Favorite & Carolan's Draught. You'll see where Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson must gone for inspiration. I found myself hitting the "back track" button several times (with Icarus, as well) - you just don't want that feeling to leave.

As another reviewer noted, this is a wonderful sampler for those with eclectic tastes. It could also be a roadmap for the musical traveler (whether player or listener) looking for new sources of inspiration. Check it out - you'll find something old that's also wonderfully new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sing Out Magazine May 1999, October 11, 1999
By A Customer
Label this one "the Sideman's Day in the Spotlight". Bob Green has toured or recorded with everyone from Hazel Dickens and Tommy Makem to Akira Satake and Shawn Colvin. This tight eight-track sampler showcases Green's prowess on fiddle, mandolin, bass, bouzouki, manmdocelo and guitar. Not only is Green a multi-instrumentalist, he's also a multi-stylist who easily moves from a dreamy Brazilian samba to a reworking of the New Age standard "Icarus", and then kicks up his heels with a pair of Irish dance tunes. He also rounds off the album with a couple of slip jigs. Center stage looks good on Green. (R Weir)
