Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Simple fact: while there are plenty of indie rock bands in the late '90s with one guy doing all the work, there aren't that many indie rock one-man bands. Enter Jeremy Jacobson, the Lonesome Organist, who takes sonic cues from the last hundred years of American music on his second album, Cavalcade. There's surf rock on "Balloon Race Phenomenon," ragtime on "Cranked Up Too Hard," garage rock on "Dirty Plight," and a ton of instruments--musical saws, tap shoes, keyboards, and horns--thrown into the mix. Recording live and without overdubs, the Lonesome Organist somehow manages to orchestrate tunes that defy logic and traditional song structures; most of the time he sounds like a carousel calliope in need of repair. By the time he reaches "Lap Steel," the 16th and final track, you'll be exhausted but impressed. If you've ever dreamed of hearing Tom Waits pounding away at a giant theater Wurlitzer, perhaps the Lonesome Organist is for you. --Jason Verlinde

5.0 out of 5 stars A fond memory, March 3, 2000
Never have I consciously pruchased a disc that I knew I would rarely listen to, at least until I spotted the Lonesome Organist. I saw him perform live and had to have a copy of this disc just to pop into my player and relive the more amazing performance I had ever witnessed. The man combines street-performer energy, organ, drums, harmonic, John Spencer-ish growls, guitar, steel drum, tap dancing and jingling bells into the most intoxicating mash of sound I have ever experienced. His pure emotion and energy are enough to give one the chills and his tunes are dammed catchy to boot. If you don't own this disc, buy it and makes sure you see the Lonseome O live. If you see him live, you will buy this disc just to cuddle up with while reflecting fondly upon the greatest show you have ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helter skelter of brilliant talent, March 15, 2005
By alex bushman (Michigan) - See all my reviews
Each song is crazy and individual and doesn't necessarily flow with the rest of the album in style, but contributes to the crazy feel. Some of the songs have a distinctly Carribean feel to them because he plays the steel drums, but the style changes up at times. To me, this music really epitomizes the term "Alternative Music" because there really isn't a category for this and "Indie Rock" simply doesn't cover it. It's just manic.
