Product Description

Editorial Review

Want to get a bird's-eye view of your house? All you need are the Aerial Camera from Smithsonian Adventures and a good-sized kite or helium balloon. Just assemble the pieces, insert a disposable camera (one is included), and up you go. Experiment with different camera angles and different elevations. Then bring the camera back down, develop the film, and see a new perspective. --Rob Lightner

From Parents' Choice®

A nifty craft activity for older kids (10 and up) and adults to enjoy together, the aerial camera adds a new dimension to the age- old hobby of flying single-line kites. Send the unit aloft, trigger the shutter, then look forward to seeing your bird's eye views once the film is developed. A 1999 Parents' Choice® Silver Honor Winner. (Parents' Choice®)

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk, July 20, 2001

I paid that much money for a piece of cardboard and some sticky aluminum foil. The instructions didn't tell you exactly how to fold it. it did not tell you how to attach it to the kite. I can't believe it has the Smithsonian Institutes name on it.

Seriously, this is not an exaggeration. All it is is a thin piece of cardboard and a shinny sticker to stick to it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!, July 25, 2002

My husband and I bought this for his younger brother - 11 years old - to use at the beach. I can't tell you how disappointed we were with it. The instructions are HORRIBLE. How to fold the box, attach it to a kite other than a D-wing is not explained at all. There seem to be some extra parts attached to the part to click the camera, but we couldn't really figure out what they were for, if anything. Also, once we got it put together, we ended up taking a lot of pictures of ourselves from close up, since the camera would take a picture on the ground, not up in the air, once the peg was removed.
They also forget to mention that not only do you need scissors, glue, and tape (an Exacto knife would be helpful with the cutting out of the holes), but you also need an extra reel of kite string - otherwise, you can't get the peg out of the box to let the camera take a picture.
All I can say is this was one of the most disappointing toys we've ever bought, and I really thought it would be so much fun and the instructions would be clear - it has the Smithsonian's name on it for goodness sakes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Toy once built!, December 30, 2002

My wife was really excited to build and use this toy (that she got for me!) Because of this enthusiasm she endured the TERRRIBLE set of instructions. There were omissions in the directions and the trigger assembly had extra parts which really confused us. However, it is a simple mechinism and we figured it out. Then we had to remember how to fly a kite.... that was fun. Finally, we put it all together and had a great afternoon taking really cool photos! Yes, you need to tinker with it to get it to stabalize but it worked reliably and consistently to the end. In fact, it was such a fun experience that we're buying another camera for it and continuing down the path of aerial photography!
