Editorial Reviews

Review

Rather than release both of the Fingertip Sessions volumes in America as they were originally issued, Thirsty Ear combined selections from the two for Nothing Lives Long, keeping the cover art from the second one intact. "Raining Stones," "Big Red Control Machine," "Third Unattended Bag on the Right," and "The Tragic Story" turned up from the original EP, while the remaining eight songs came from the full album. With a fully rearranged running order for all the tracks, it makes a handy way for cost-conscious fans and newcomers alike to sample Brave Captain's wares. As such, it actually makes for a better introduction to Martin Carr's solo career than either of the two original releases, dropping some of the lesser cuts like "Starfish." From the songs that do remain (especially the earlier cuts), it's still obvious that Sice was practically born to sing them instead of his ex-Boo Radleys cohort, but the music itself is often quite enjoyable, very much in line with his old band's mix-and-match approach to pop, and Carr acquits himself vocally better than might be expected. The unheralded but key participant in the sessions is Gorwel Owen, the Welsh producer and musician whose enthusiasm and mentoring vision assisted so many of his fellow countrymen, like Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, through the 1990s. Besides engineering all the songs, Carr performs everything from percussion and guitar to glockenspiels and, in one amusing credit, "that machine that goes blamblamblam." The cryptic but appreciative liner notes come from Mike Watt, who contributed the band's name by penning a song of that title on fIREHOSE's Ragin', Full-On back in 1986. It's a nice nod back, even though Carr's music bears no obvious connection to Watt's rock/punk/jazz fusions. --All Music Guide

Product Description

Brave Captain is Martin Carr (ex-Boo Radleys leader/songwriter). More ethereal than the bittersweet pop tunage of the Boo Rad's. Pure Bacarach pop. The full title is 'Nothing LastsLong , He Sang, Only The Earth And The Mountains'. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Musical Genius, June 24, 2001
By Chastaine Keaton "houston alexander" (Cincinnati, OH United States) - See all my reviews
Martin Carr, former mastermind behind the Boo Radley's, establishes himself as possibly the greatest music writer in history with this record. His work is far more advanced than 95% of the musicians out there, yet he remains underappreciated. Think of what made the great ones special...Stevie Wonder playing all those instruments and making a groove out of them, Paul McCartney creating rich pop melodies among the many instruments he plays, Brian Wilson and those catchy pop hooks, or how about Jimmy Page overlapping 3 and 4 guitars for that rich textured sound. All of these musicians have earned their way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and rightly so. However, Martin Carr can do everything these musicians can do just as good, if not better. He's also more experimental than these artists too. It's like he puts together a beautiful pop masterpiece, and then rips it up with some feedback or a killer riff. He writes full symphonies and plays them over wailing guitars. He sings sweet catchy songs about insanity and The Tragic Story of the Working People. The world made a mistake and neglected The Boo Radleys. Now that Martin Carr is on his own, throw away that Eagles disc and try Brave Captain. Buy it...and keep listening!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Martin Carr's brave side-project, May 14, 2004
As the brains behind the music of The Boo Radleys, Brave Captain provides Martin Carr more artistic freedom, a wider latitude to experiment. His side project combines everything from Aphex Twin/Mouse On Mars electronica and Flaming Lips psychadelia, to ringing industrial clanks and the Dandy Warhols-type fuzz-pop. You can sense Carr's musical thought process here, dabbling in different genres creating a pastiche of sounds and styles. Yet the CD has an undercurrent of The Boo Radleys' quirky structures and melodic wispful sound (sans trumpets and shoegaze tendencies) Martin Carr almost seemed liked a restless spirit with The Radleys, an unconventional musical visionary making music on 'his terms', which continues with side-project Brave Captain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Bill's #13 of 2001, December 29, 2001
By "bigbill72" (Cincinnati Ohio) - See all my reviews
Ex Boo Radley's leader Martin Carr picks up in full swing with his solo project Brave Captain. If you liked The Boo Radley's, or if you like The Beatles, Blur, or Pavement, pick up this disc. Track #11, The Third Unattended Bag on the Right, is the #1 SONG OF THE YEAR. And no one has heard it.
