5.0 out of 5 stars The Minders Prove Their Worth, May 28, 2001
By Tim Russell (McMinnville, OR. United States) - See all my reviews
After buying and listening to their last EP, Down in Fall, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Minders. Down in Fall was an incredible artistic step for the Minders but didn't seem to fit their traditional style. Golden Street is a huge step for the Minders. On Hooray for Tuesday and Cul-de-sacs and Dead Ends, their songs average about 1-2 minutes. Golden Street proves that they are indeed growing as musicians. The music follows what they've done before but takes it a step forward. They develop more individual style. The introduction to the song Golden Streets takes the listener back to a time where 60s pop never died but they place a modern twist on their music so that it is appealing to everybody. When I first played this album on the college radio station I DJ for, I was amazed that the first song I played was three minute songs. I have seen the Minders twice in concert and they're even better live. I would like to wish them luck on making more incredible albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars More catchy XTC-inspired pop, February 8, 2002
By Pop Kulcher "Pop Kulcher" (San Carlos, CA USA) - See all my reviews
One of the lesser-known acts in the Elephant 6 neo-pop stable, the Minders are America's answer to XTC, edgy pop that rests squarely in Lennon-McCartney land but with an occasional tendency to annoy. Fortunately, the latter tendency is largely absent on this album, their most consistent -- and most fully produced -- to date. Not every song bears repeating (particularly the more downbeat tracks later on the disc), but it offers a handful of hooks that will stick in your brain for weeks. The title track and the similar-sounding "Give Me Strength" will make any XTC fan cry ..."Hand on Heart" is a rollicking romp, and if "Right as Rain" isn't the catchiest song of the year, it's at least in the running.

5.0 out of 5 stars golden street is golden, April 2, 2001
By P. Schumacher (atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is as good as or better than all previous Minders records. In addition to the very lovely, always catchy trademark Minders sound, there are two new kinds of song--Light and A New Kind of Way. The Minders take their Neo-Psychedelic sound to the next logical step: backward tape-loops, long LONG instrumental breaks, dissonant sounds. These are a very nice complement to the rest of the album--they leaven the sugary up-tempo tunes with a dose of strangeness. Also there is the woman brushing her teeth, and a piano instrumental that would fit on a classical LP. Catchy, deep, and strange. A must for fans.
