Product Description

From the Manufacturer
The Aiwa XP-SP920 Cross Trainer portable CD player features advanced EASS (Electronic Anti-Shock System) Plus to virtually eliminate skipping during active use. With a significantly extended horizontal-motion tolerance range and extremely precise laser pickup focus servo control, Aiwa attacks the problem at the source. The laser pickup is far less likely to mistrack as a result of severe shock, and, should mistracking occur, recovery time is much shorter than with earlier-generation systems. Combined with the digital buffer memory, this design significantly improves the ability of the XP-SP920 to deliver uninterrupted music, no matter what you are doing.

Aiwa's Front Surround design lets the unit render huge, spacious sound. The unit offers two upward-firing speakers in addition to the two normal front-facing stereo speakers. Because the sound from the additional speakers is reflected and just slightly delayed before reaching your ears, you get an impressive surround sound effect with enhanced presence and depth.

In addition, the XP-SP920's Super T-Bass delivers surprisingly deep and powerful bass sound without the "boominess" that characterizes systems with less sophisticated low-frequency enhancement circuits. That's because Super T-Bass was specifically engineered to improve the low-end performance of small speakers, taking into account their particular resonance characteristics.

Q Surround circuitry lets you experience surround sound using just two speakers. Using unique signal processing algorithms based on advanced psychoacoustics, Q Surround creates a phantom center channel, expands the front left and right stereo soundfields, and places virtual surround speakers around you to simulate the effect of a multichannel system. Aiwa portable stereos with Q Surround can thus deliver a rich, all-encompassing soundfield that recreates the "you are there" experience as no conventional compact 2-speaker system can.

The XP-SP920's convenience features include an innovative neckband headphone design that securely holds the earpieces in place, 3-point indicators that tell you at a glance how much battery power you have left, and a stopwatch function with 10-lap memory.

This unit also incorporates equalization circuitry with preprogrammed settings (classical, pop/rock, and jazz) that you can quickly and easily select to keep your music sounding the best. Also included is a built-in exercise monitor that lets you set your own training goals. This feature helps you maintain the proper pace and lets you know when you've reached your target distance or calorie burn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool player..great sound, July 21, 2001
By Kallis23 (Richmond Heights, OH United States) - See all my reviews
I owned a panasonic before i went looking for a new one. My experience with it was quite good. my search for a new one came down to the panasonic SLX286J aiwa xp-sp290. a friend of mine already owned the slx286j and although i found the sound to be very good it wasnt that much of an improvement over the previous panasonic i owned, wich incidentally cost me half, so i decided to try the aiwa xp-sp290. i really wasnt interested in the car kits offered by quite a few other players or in having an AM/FM stereo. i was basically looking for a reasonably priced player that gives excellent sound and wich i can take with me on a jog, and the aiwa crosstrainer performs outstandingly on both counts. The sound is much better than wat i experienced with any player in the same price range and the dsl function really does add a thump to the beats.and it does not skip at all while im jogging too, thanx to the 48 second anti skip mecahnism . plus it looks absolutely cool as against the panasonic models wich look kinda plain, it plays all my CD-RWs wich is another advantage for all those having home-made CDs. I was kinda concerned about the battery life cuz i dint wanna spend a lot just on changin batteries, however the player dispelled this fear too . it gives about 28-30 hours ,plus it come with an inbuilt recharging capability wich i thought was really cool. Just pop in a pair of rechargeables and dont worry bout changin batteries for quite some time. Minus Points :well..nothin tat notable tat could take away a star or half..but if aiwa could throw in a few things like a nice remote and carrying case like panasonic does for its SL-SX28J,wich cost bout the same, then that would be really awesome. however...maybe tats askin 4 too much for somethin tats already so good, so i guess the 5 stars stay! All in all..if u r looking 4 a great soundin player within a reasonable price range and wich has a lotta other really useful features (48 sec anti-skip,dsl, rechargebility, great looks)the this is the one to go for!

1.0 out of 5 stars A company that doesn't care., April 22, 2002
By Allen Berry (California) - See all my reviews
We bought the player at the end of November and gave it as a Christmas gift. It began malfunctioning by mid March. The stereo only works when you pull the plug partway out and the unit also stops playing on a random basis...just turns off for no apparent reason. When contacted, AIWA customer service said 'tough luck... you bought it more than 90 days ago so you pay for service'. These are obvious manufacturing defects and occurred within 90 days of use although the actual purchase occurred a month before it was used. I would have though that AIWA would have wanted to stand behind the quality of their product. It will be the last AIWA product I will buy

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for people on the go, July 25, 2002
By Daniel R. Martin (Grand Haven, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This AIWA Cross Trainer works fairly well - it doesn't skip if you run with the CD Player in your hand. However, I've found that even walking with the CD Player in a cargo pocket of my pants will cause skipping. Unlike the Sony Discman player, there is no hand strap on this AIWA model. So if you don't mind holding on to the CD Player while you walk or run, it's a fairly good buy.

The headphones, however, tend to be a bit uncomfortable after a period of time. The little curly things that hook onto your ears put a little pressure on your ears, causing some discomfort. I often use the CD Player but use the more comfortable headphones from a different model.
