Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

No longer the angsty early-twentysomethings of the Tossing Seeds era, Superchunk have been moving toward the "grownup" classification in age, if not in sound, for a good half decade. Come Pick Me Up, the group's 1999 album, found them heading there musically, too, but it's with Here's to Shutting Up that they've aced the growing-older-while-remaining-punk shtick. The band opens the album on an unabashedly adult-contemporary note with "Late-Century Dream," a midtempo tune full of percussion, strings, and vocal frills. They range through more mature territory, both musically and lyrically, in "Phone Sex," a pedal steel-accented tale of long-distance love in the age of planes, phones, and post-adolescent ennui. They paint a grim picture of life in the static, sweltering South in the blistering "Florida's on Fire."; And they venture into Tropicalia territory usually reserved for singer Mac McCaughan's other band, Portastatic, on "What Do You Look Forward To?," a reflection on the rigors of touring. There's not a song on the album that isn't wonderful, and most are even better. For you who loved Superchunk but felt it was nearing time to leave them, Shutting Up is just the album to renew your affections. --Sarah Sternau

5.0 out of 5 stars give it a chance, December 2, 2001
By A Customer
I own all of superchunks albums and must say they are aging quite well and to this day I am suprised that they are not a household name. Anyways the days of Mac screaming are gone hes now singin, which is actually a good thing.....
No they havent gone soft just added some variety to their arsenal. What Im trying to say is give the album a chance its wonderful.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn good, November 26, 2001

(REAL NAME)
Superchunk has always ruled the NC music scene, and for the first time they seem to be reaching out to more than just the usual college fan base. Great album, especially "Late-Century Dream" and "Art Class."

4.0 out of 5 stars Maturing nicely, November 4, 2001
Should this be anyone's FIRST Superchunk album? Oh, no. Just as I would the Replacements, I'd point to a noisier cut of 'Chunk, probably 1994's "Foolish," and let the listener explore the maturing process if they so wished...

Is it their best? No, "Come Pick Me Up" is (so far) their masterpiece.

Still, there's a lot of interesting textures, and enough hooks crunch to make a lot of current bands dream of writing songs this good. You will find yourself humming melodies long after you've turned the CD off. You won't catch a lot of the lyrics, but half the fun is catching a line here or there.

Still, probably one of the top five of 2001...

5.0 out of 5 stars I believe some dead Greek guy said "comparison is odious."
Considering the arc of Superchunk's career and the sheer volume of songs (most of them quite excellent) that they've recorded, it's no surprise that the sound and the energy of... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars I do not look forward to this album
I don't know why Superchunk has decided that its songs need to be slathered with keyboards. And Mac has decided that he likes crooning when his excited yelp is a whole lot more... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely their wimpest, worst of 11albums
Do I also hear some keyboard on some songs? Except for PERE UBU, SCREAMERS and I REFUSE IT! (Italy, early 80's), I can barely stand any keyboard in any rock. Read more
