Joseph Curiale's committed and spirited performances of his own works rely heavily on the tranquil balancing of different orchestral and instrumental sounds. "Gates of Gold," for example, which is dedicated to the Chinese immigrant communities of California, sets off its passionate violin soloist against the bell-like background of the percussion, vigorously dancing brass straight out of Copland's ballets, and a string sound that owes as much to Hollywood as to minimalism.
Awakening is a pantheistic celebration of the composer's survival of serious illness in the California countryside. "Adelina de Maya" portrays Curiale's sister and her love of Iberian and Latin American music--its guitar writing is a deliberate homage to the works of Rodrigo and Villa-Lobos. The short chamber work "The Multiples of One" is another minimalist piece, with delicate scoring, simple ideas, and a repetitiveness that becomes ritual.

Product Description
This is the third and newest release of the "Awakening" CD which includes a preview bonus track, "Blue Windows" featuring Doc Severinsen and Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. This new addition joins all the compositions of the original releases of the "Awakening" CD featuring The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. "Gates of Gold" which has become the most performed and most requested composition from the CD is a tribute to the Chinese immigrants of the Gold Rush days who helped to build the West. The title track, "Awakening", pays tribute to three beautiful qualities, or "fruits" of the spirit. "Adelina de Maya" is a piece for guitar and orchestra in honor of my sister, and "The Multiples of One" expresses the "oneness" of all creation.
