Eyes Adrift represents the first teaming of Krist Novoselic, guitarist Curt Kirkwood, and former Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh. While Novoselic's previous project, Sweet 75, was misbegotten, the ex- Nirvana bassist's new "tragedy all-star" band draws on a rich vein of lilting psychedelic country rock that borrows heavily from the mid-period work of another of its members, the Meat Puppets' Kirkwood. Eyes Adrift's Americana resonates thanks to its solidness and maturity. --Everett True

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collaboration, I hope they keep playing together, October 19, 2002
By "drumb" (milwaukee, wi United States) - See all my reviews
Before one can even discuss the band Eyes Adrift, their impressive personal must first be noted. Eyes Adrift is an alternative super-group that includes veteran rockers Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets, Krist Noveselic of the late Nirvana and the lesser known Sweet 75, and Bud Gaugh, formerly of Sublime and currently an on-off member of the Long Beach Dub All Stars. Each of these musicians has experienced their own respective pains and problems in their previous bands, each losing one of their best friends and fellow band members to drugs or suicide. Because of this, Noveselic has joked that Eyes Adrift is a relief band to help these talented artists deal with their difficult pasts, but regardless of what Eyes Adrift is as a band, it is nice to see the stunning guitar-work of Curt Kirkwood, the long absent solid bass playing of Krist Noveselic, and the jazzy drumming of Bud Gaugh all brought together on a single CD. Although more straightforward then the Meat Puppets and less aggressive than Nirvana, there is just as much acoustic guitar as electric on this CD, Eyes Adrift manages to put together a beautiful album of country tinged bittersweet songs that craft stories of love and life all told through Kirkwood's traditional lyrical style and seemingly obscure or nonsensical references. The music here is truly sincere and the deep passionate emotions on tracks like "Untried" and "Blind Me" are only made more touching through Curt Kirkwood's very human and imperfect voice. Krist also sings on some tracks displaying his trademark form of cynicism on "Inquiring Minds", an entertaining spoof about the Jean Benai Ramsey case, and on "Pasted", the album's 15 minute opus in which Krist describes the faults of the ignorant record buying public and the importance of true music enthusiasts before his voice is devoured by layers of guitar and noise. Eyes Adrift definitely has their own sound, but the influence of the member's former bands is far from absent with "Alaska" sounding like it could easily be on a Nirvana album and the quirky bludgeoning riffs of "Telescope" sounding like something that got left off of the Meat Puppets album Monsters. Furthermore, "Solid" and "Slow Race" are both songs that Curt Kirkwood had been previously playing on his own solo acoustic tour, but the addition of Krist and Bud to the tracks give them both added depth and strength. What I think is most successful though about the debut Eyes Adrift album is that Curt, Krist, and Bud have not only managed to make a CD that appeals to fans of their incredible previous bands but have also created an album full of new and revitalized music that can be appreciated by anyone, regardless of their knowledge or love of Eyes Adrift's musical past. A calming and heartfelt album, Eyes Adrift has turned what could've been a purely commercial super-group into one of the most musically sincere and gifted bands on today's rock scene and I'm looking forward to the continuing efforts of this creative and original group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beach music- Krist Novoselic has a great singing voice!, January 2, 2005
By 66909 (Bradenton, florida) - See all my reviews
I NEVER splerge on a CD that I've never heard.
But I did.
Well ok I did hear "Alaska" & "Inquiring Minds".
Well as soon as I popped this cd in with my friends we drove out to the beach and played it all the way through, my friends who are die hard SLIPKNOT fans had 2 remarks:
1. This is good!
2. I want to buy this album
This cd compliments a beautiful day on the beach.
The best song is "Pasted" sung by Krist Novoselic (who does a good job) I loved it sooo much that I'm buying the single to "alaska" because it has a song called "Son of Pasted" which I believe is a different mix of my favorite song.
It's such a shame that Krist Novoselic has left the music business.
Recently I heard that Krist is pondering a solo cd, that is great news considering my favorite tracks on this cd (besides 'Alaska' & 'What I Said') are with Krist Singing.

In my opinion this is better than the Foo Fighters.
I buy a Krist Novoselic solo CD in a second.

4.0 out of 5 stars I hope this isn't a side project..., October 22, 2002
By Josh Feierman (Chapel Hill, NC United States) - See all my reviews
Much of this album sounds like a brand new Meat Puppets album with cooler bass and drums (which is good in and of itself). However, I think this band really wakes up when Krist Novoselic sings, especially on Inquiring Minds and Pasted. He doesn't have pipes, to say the least, but the words have the kind of twisted piss-and-vinegar humanity that we haven't heard much of since...ummm...Nirvana and Kurt Kirkwood responds with guitar playing that's more intense and floridly psychedelic than his usual.
