Biography

Best known for his tenure fronting the Scottish pop revivalists Orange Juice as well as his international solo hit "A Girl Like You," singer Edwyn Collins was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1959. In 1976, he formed the Nu-Sonics, which resurfaced three years later as Orange Juice; the leading proponent of the Glasgow neo-pop scene, the band earned a devoted cult following but little commercial… Read more in Amazon's Edwyn Collins Store

Doctor Syntax is former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins's fifth solo album in 13 years. Three years in the making, it's his first LP since 1997's I'm Not Following You and comes a full seven years after his breakthrough single, "A Girl Like You." Its name inspired by an early 19th century satire, Doctor Syntax is a finely crafted collection of alt-pop gems that drip with soul and wry wit. Enjoying his status as an indie-rock elder statesman, Collins delivers cunning asides that occasionally burst into overt ridicule "The Beatles" is an acerbic "arch-riposte" to the Fab Four, while "Back to the Backroom" belittles Cool Britannia. With the jangly guitars of his earlier work all but extinct, Collins's music is now lined with sugary summer soul and driven by sleek, sophisticated rhythms. --Christopher Barrett

5.0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with you?, June 17, 2003

Why haven't you bought it yet? The man labored well over 5 years to get this thing right, and boy did he ever. This album flows, shimmers and entertains. Even the underhanded "tribute" the to the beatles (named appropriately enough "the beatles"), works wonders. The production as always is impeccable. Bonus tracks are great, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Unifying Groove, July 24, 2003
By WrtnWrd "Hankman" (Northridge, CA USA) - See all my reviews
On his fifth solo release, Doctor Syntax, the deep-voiced Scotsman Edwyn Collins trades the eclectic messiness of his previous work for the unifying focus of a subtle groove. Yet the musical tradeoff hasn't dimmed his iconoclastic touch. There is still that strange hiccup in his voice (it often sounds like a defect on the CD). And his love songs are fraught with anxiety and indecision. "No Idea", "Johnny Teardrop", "Splitting Up" - there's not a lot of cheer in Collins' world. Yet Doctor Syntax is never a stone drag. And the three extra tracks for US release are more than just filler -they make a good album better (especially the duet with Bernard Butler, "Message for JoJo").

This witty, sardonic masterpiece can be summed up in two words: Bitter sophistication.
