Biography

New York-based band Firewater, incorporated a global range of musical influences into their highly-dynamic sound. A loosely-knit ensemble centered around the lead vocals of ex-Cop Shoots Cop bass player Tod A. (born: Tod Ashley), Firewater tied together such influences as Klezmer, Indian wedding music, art-punk, and Tom Waits-style cabaret poetry to create their heady, often quite danceable sound.… Read more in Amazon's Firewater Store

5.0 out of 5 stars How can this be five stars?, January 29, 2005
I feel suspect for giving this album five stars. I mean everyone who is enthralled by a given album hands them out like a kindergarten teacher who is thrilled that the students are actualy retaining anything. Simple answer - Firewater is the teacher! Like the newly revived CVB or vintage Waits, they simply made an album like no-one does anymore. A variety of styles by a singular voice. So when they pass over the indie rock stylings of "Don't Make It Stop", it feels like a revelation. It's like a great foreign film that suddenly turns to english. So if you like a mixed bag of styles delivered by a band and a singer that make them their own, this is your ticket to ride. Simply fantastic. And while you are at it pick up The Ponzi Scheme. This is a great band that people will discover years after they disappear from the scene. Great lyrics, great music, a singular style. Though I don't play it 24/7, whenever it makes it out, I feel like something is going on, somewhere!--

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing FIREWATER!!!!!!!manontheburningtightrope, June 18, 2003
By jeremy patterson (Salem, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This has got to be the best of Firewater yet. I've been a fan since the old CSC days, and have followed tod a and Firewaters' progression over the years since the 1996 debut. The man on the Burning Tighrope has the most experimentally frayed-edges of instrumentation feeling Firewater have presented thus far. Tod shared his drink with anyone from Tom Waits to Alice Cooper('Vegas Strip' sounds like 'Some Folks', to me, in a way, without sounding like it at all.) And the swill they left in his glass conjealed into tons of carnival-carousel, monkey-grinder sounds, jesters dancing around a bonfire, marching themes, big fat basses, angry distortions, and the empty bottle hitting the floor as you drop your last coin in the slot.(Or was that Tamir?) Overall an EXCELLENT cd--One I won't put down for years, only to pick it right back up again. BEWARE--It may take time to adjust youself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still good, March 25, 2008
By belouski (Camarillo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
My favorite Firewater is probably Get off the Cross. That album has a number of different sounds, but comes together to make a great package. This album feels a tad listless, and meanders a bit too much.
There are still some good songs and is overall worth the purchase.
