I specifically wanted a vertical laptop bag with fewer pockets and lightweight carry. This bag fits the need perfectly and has a fine shoulder pad. Overall design is simple and utilitarian. The sections & pockets are fewer but very large and can carry almost anything. A negative is that after 3 months of daily use, the inside laptop section divider fabric stitching has started to break and separate through normal use. This also reveals the thin polyfoam construction of the internal divider. At best, this is okay and a compromise for weight and cost, but given all the other design & assembly compromises, I wonder if this will last a year or 2 without becoming an annoyance?

I use this messenger bag for my Macbook Pro 15'' and it's amazing, the space for the laptop is just great and the good thing is that it has also an special space for the charger and papers.

I've had this bag for 4 months now. It is a nice looking bag, and also has a nice light and small design. It fits my notebook, power chords, and notebook-mouse just fine without looking stuffed or too thick. In fact, I really liked this bag until one day...

It was a rainy day. I packed my notebook as usual, stepped outside assuming all would be protected and safe. However, if you look carefully, the flap that swings over the top is not made to wrap around the edges. There is an angled gap of roughly half an inch on both sides of the flap, that provides direct access to the notebook.

Luckily for me, it was a short walk to the car in very heavy rain. when I opened my notebook bag, I discovered water on the edges of my notebook. And now, I have to always remember to stuff paper towels on the edges just in case it rains.

Buy this for my mbp 13 ", I should buy the smallest model but the idea was to share with my wife a few times (she has a 15.6" laptop). The bag looks great and protects the laptop very well and not be as fancy as the Speck PortPack becomes safer in urban environments in my opinion.

would be good maybe one or two pockets for small items.

I actually bought one of these bags when I bought my macbook pro years ago. So I have had one of these bags for about 4 or 5 years. Its still together and everything. only problem I had was the zipper on the back got torn up, but i never used that pocket anyway. Carries everything I need. I have used this bag in all weather climates, and if you aren't an idiot, it will protect your laptop from medium exposure.

I use this bag every day and I simply love it!
At first I was second guessing myself as if I should get it or not for the fact that it is a vertical messenger bag rather than regular horizontal bags, but I got used to it the first day I used it...
I kind of wish I had a little bit more room for stuff, or more pockets but like I said it's been working great for what I need.

After much research, I purchased this bag for a 15.6 inch laptop. The selection criteria included size (not too bulky), weight, functionality, sufficient pockets for accessories. This bag fits the requirements perfectly. It is well made, appears durable, has just the right size protective area for the laptop and just enough pockets for the usual accessories. This bag is not for the individual who needs to carry lots of books in addition to a laptop.

I used the predecessor of this model with my 12" PowerBook and loved it. Great build quality, very usable pockets/accessories, and sized perfectly to fit the 12" PB I had, the original STM Alley was an excellent bag.

Fast forward to today, I bought this updated STM Alley model to fit my 15" MacBook Pro. Not quite as nice.

Overall design is nice, with a few notable exceptions.

Compartment for the laptop is huge, almost like it was designed to have a sleeve on the laptop before sliding into the bag. Padding is not as substantial as my old 12" Alley bag. Users may want to add a slice of foam in the bottom of the bag to help protect against bumps and/or use a sleeve to snug up the whole affair.

The addition of the outer flap pocket is nice and useful. The deletion of the side accessory mounting straps is unfortunate (nowhere to hang iPod or cell phone). The inner pocket is as useful as the previous bag's but I preferred the mesh of the previous model to allow easy viewing of the pocket & location of items in the pocket.

Updated velcro fasteners on the outer flap is a better system than the previous model.

Lastly, the shoulder pad on my example is coming apart after ~4 months of use (which consists of going from car to work to school to home - nothing too harsh).

I've seen far worse bags (especially for the price - STM bags are pretty affordable), but I guess overall my expectations for this bag were pretty high based on my experience with the first STM bag I had. So, in comparison, this bag is a bit of a let down.

I'd recommend it, but I'd also advise folks to get a nice sleeve to wrap around their 15" MacBook Pro for best results.
