Great Design, Powerful Learning Function, November 16, 2005
This remote has outstanding ergonomics!!! It has a nice compact shape that is comfortable and balanced to hold. When held naturally, the volume buttons and channel buttons are in the ideal location. (which is important since they are so freqently used) However, the menu select button is a bit too small and the play/ff/rev buttons could have had a slightly better layout. Despite this the rubber buttons have a comfortable and grippy feel, and the labelling of the numbers buttons are very legible.
The programmable learning function is very simple to use, and worked great for me, even with the very rare asian brand DVD player I had. I use it to control my TV, DVD Player, VCR, and Stereo surround system with no hassles at all.
If you want a great, inexpensive compact programmable remote, this is it. It is very powerful for the price! I think it allows you to string combinations of commands together, but I have not used this function.
It doesn't have dedicated buttons for eject, next chapter, or slow motion, so if you want lots of dedicated buttons, look for a larger remote, but I easily programmed these functions onto some of the other available buttons, so this remote does everything I want it to.
I am afraid it will be discontinued, and I like it so much I am buying another one.

Great universal remote at a great price!!!, May 25, 2005
This is a really cool remote!! Controls all the high tech devices you can imagine & nearly every button can be programmed to control whatever you want it to (learning function). Also, it doesn't cost a ton of $$$ like other universal remotes & isn't so bulky as many others. Nice job SONY!

Good remote, May 25, 2007
Strange that some people are saying this remote is "worthless". I guess these people are too technically challenged, or could not be bothered to actually learn how to use this remote. It's not very difficult to use and all I can say to these people is RTFM. Good luck to you guys using ANY remote at all if you couldn't handle using this one...
The secret to using any "learning" remote, like this one, is to throw the device codes out the window. Never use a device code with a learning remote, there's no need and it works better if you don't. Simply program every button you need from the original remotes signals. That's why you buy a "learning" remote isn't it? Forget the codes. It may seem like a pain, but you will have a remote that does EXACTLY what YOU want, not one that behaves like the codes think it should.
Plus learning remotes can control just about any IR device. Celing fans, window blinds, switch boxs, thermostats, whatever. If it has a remote that uses a regular IR signal (most things do) you can have this remote learn its functions. Shame on those people for putting down such a useful tool.
I bought this remote over 3 years ago and absolutely love it. My only problem with it is I am outgrowing it and would like a few more buttons. Even having simple track forward and back buttons would be much better, but for the price this remote is a great deal for how well it works.
Well even though I'm looking for something newer with a few more buttons, I still love this remote and have so for years. If you don't want to bother having to teach a remote the buttons you need or are too mentally challenged to do so then stay away from all learning remotes... If however you can handle very easy to follow instructions and want a remote that can be tailored to your EXACT needs this remote is a tremendous BARGIN!
