Product Description

Editorial Review

While a handful of board games have attempted to incorporate VHS tapes for a more visceral experience, the technology usually proved too clunky and unmanageable to provide enough fun to make it worth the hassle. But since it relies on digital technology, a DVD is inherently more precise, this makes it easier to work in to such games as Atmosfear. The game has a horror movie feel to it, featuring mummies, vampires and assorted other beasties and ghoulies. The cards drawn by players often correspond to time marks on the included DVD and ask you to be interactive with your fellow contestants, for instance: "at 46:50, start to giggle insanely. If any opponent asks why you laugh hand them this card and this message: I'm having the last laugh: You're BANISHED to the BLACK HOLE". It's a game for extroverts and technology lovers but if those factors, or the monsters in the design, don't scare you off, it should be a lot of fun. --Charlie Williams

Product Description

The gatekeeper serves as your host in this interactive game of fear and nerves. Move around the board to collect all six keys with the help of special Fate and Time cards. Used effectively, hints from the included DVD give you an edge on the competition. Frighteningly fun and different each time you play. For three to six players.

3.0 out of 5 stars Frightens 11-year-old boys, August 21, 2004
Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This was the first DVD board game I have ever tried, so I was interested to see how it would play out. I played it with my 11-year-old son and his 10-year-old friend. At first, they refused to play it at night because they were worried they were going to be too scared. So we tried it during the day.

In the game, you have 49 minutes to race around the board collecting each of six different colored keys. As you play, the Gatekeeper interrupts you and tries to prevent you from winning while verbally abusing the players. (It's done in a very campy style, all in fun.)

I found it difficult to keep track of what was going on in the game because of the frequent interruptions, although it was easier the second time around (which was at night because the boys declared the game not at all scary). Although the game's manufacturer claims that no game is ever the same, there is not enough variety in the Gatekeeper's actions to keep an adult interested past the third or fourth playing.

That being said, it would be a great game for a Halloween party. It's quite spooky. I'd like to try it on my son's friends after I set up the family room with black lights and spooky decorations. They'd definitely have a blast.

The game is much more fun if you end up racing the clock to beat the Gatekeeper. We were all on our feet during the last minute of play the second time through, cheering each other on and passing the dice as quickly as possible so one of us could beat the Gatekeeper. I was surprised at the teamwork evident at the end of the game. It was nice to see, after my son had tried everything to defeat me during the rest of the game.

I'd give this gane an age range of 9 to 14. Would I buy it again? Yes, but for a Halloween party or one of my son's Harry Potter birthday parties. Not for everyday use.

4.0 out of 5 stars VHS version a little better..., January 5, 2006
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
I played "Atmosfear, The Harbingers" on VHS in the mid-90s and several years later bought a copy of the game through ebay. Then, I saw this DVD update and gave in to temptation when the price was marked down. Here's my judgement: 1) The mechanics have been simplified. This has it's pros and cons. It could have been made easier to learn without removing as many components. 2) The gatekeeper has less of a nasty/funny balance in the DVD update. 3) It is a major upswing to have his dialogue randomly disbursed.

One reviewer seemed to think the game was boring. I'll guess, instead, that the people he parties with don't have the attention span for board games. Too bad for them. Atmosfear - The DVD Board Game get's a B+ from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC ADDITION, October 6, 2004
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This game is the logical next step for this series of games. I own all 3 original nightmare vcr games, as well as Atmosphere:The Harbingers. Although I get a lot of enjoyment from the VCR games, the DVD format makes for a much more random experience. This game is terrific fun for anyone 13 or over.
