Just what you need., July 29, 2006
This review is from: High Desert Bee Pollen 1 lbs (Health and Beauty)
This pollen is the highest and freshest quality you can get without owning your own bee colony. Fast shipping and very fair price. The thousands of bees visited thousands of flowers to bring you this unparalleled food substance. I have ordered pollen from around the world, most is much drier is when you get it (which I sometimes also like as it is chewier) but this stuff is light and fresh. Keep it in the freezer as soon as you get it to preserve this indefinitely.

Yummmmmm!!....and it's tasty, too :), September 17, 2008
This review is from: High Desert Bee Pollen 1 lbs (Health and Beauty)
Great product. I love the energy I get from just a teaspoon in the morning. I have added the pollen to blended fruit drinks for my kids and they don't even know that they are getting the vitamins they need and energy they need to concentrate at school. I am so pleased with this product and will definately be purchasing more pollen from CC Pollen with the help of Amazon.com!!!!
Thank You!

I have been eating Bee Pollen regularly for the past 19 years, and have used pollen products in Canada, USA, England, Finland, and New Zealand. In NZ (my birth country) it is relatively easy to get very high quality "wild" pollen, collected from native forests, direct from the bee keeper.
Simply put, this is the worst tasting pollen I have had in all these years. I bought two bags and wish I could return them. It tastes bitter. I have never come across pollen I don't enjoy the taste of. The taste is not terrible. It is simply bitter, and I have never had bitter pollen. I can eat it, but it's not pleasant. In my experience all the pollen I have had is always sweet and delicious.
I have read through the manufacturers web site and they certainly indicate they have a strong interest in producing good quality bee products. Based on what I have read on their site (visit [...]) I would be inclined to think highly of this pollen. But the taste just doesn't appeal to me. This may result from the bees collecting from a species of plant that has a bitter tasting pollen. Hard to say.
(( I also have an issue with the fact this pollen is not certified organic. I have written more about this separately at the end of my review. ))
I had no idea pollen could taste bitter like this one does. For this reason I don't recommend it, unless you intend to mix it into a drink that will mask the taste. I really wish this product was nice, as it was very affordable. I eat a lot of pollen. This would have been a big money saver.
I see other reviewers saying they love the taste, so perhaps I have received a batch that is more bitter than the rest, or perhaps they don't know any better. I can't say. Buy some and see what you think. Then buy some from Y.S. Organic Bee Farms and see which you prefer.
The best pollen I know of in the USA is Y.S. Organic Bee Farms - Fresh Bee Pollen Whole Granules - 16.0 oz. granules, which is why I recommend using it for comparison.
It may cost more, but from my point of view it tastes better, and it is organic (which means better for you, the bees, and the environment). Whilst in the USA I usually use the Y.S Organic Bee Farms pollen and I am always very very happy with it. It is available in most of the health food stores I have shopped in for about $16 to $18 a pound, yet without the cost of shipping. Shipping on the product linked above here on Amazon is (at the time I am writing this) about 6 dollars, so look out for it at your local health food store. If this is the first time you are considering eating Bee Pollen, please try the one from Y.S. Organic Bee Farms, so that you have an accurate reference to what pollen can be like.
I have still given this product three stars because apart from the unpleasant bitter taste, the product does appear to be "fresh" pollen, and the company does appear to have an active interest in bee products and their quality. It has not been over dried. It is still soft, which is to be expected from "fresh" pollen. Some lower quality pollens are dried until they are hard.
If you wish to really boost your health, I recommend checking out the other products from Y.S. Organics. Their royal jelly, propolis, and hone, for example. The bees are wonderful beings, and everything they produce is very high in intelligence/life-force. Also, check out my other reviews (by clicking my name above the review) to see other health products I have recommended here on Amazon, if you are interested in natural wholesome health.
[[UPDATE - 15 Jul 2010 - I have opened the second bag of pollen (I ordered two). It tastes better and it has a greater variety of color. I am now thinking the first bag I opened and tried was out of the ordinary. So my recommendation now is that if you want a relatively inexpensive, fresh, NON-ORGANIC bee pollen, then I think High Desert is certainly worth trying out. If you want something that is organic, then try the one from Y.S. Organic Bee Farms. I have changed the title of this review to reflect this update.
I wish you all the best of health,

THE DYING WORLD BEE POPULATION
I am adding this information here because I think that is we wish to use products from bees (which I highly recommend) we owe it to the bees to know about the current severe threat to their existance.

As mentioned above, my other issue with this pollen is that it is not certified organic. CC POLLEN don't claim it is "organic" so this is not a criticism of the company or their product. It is, however, cause for concern for me and for the bees. A vast proportion of the crops in the USA are genetically engineered and treated with a wide range of toxic chemicals. Based on substantial research done worldwide, but primarily in Europe, the long term safety of G.E. foods is questionable. The environmental impact is also questionable. As far as non-organic chemically based agriculture, the long term effects are already well proven to be disasterous.
Personally, if I had a strong interest in bees and a business based on bees (like CC POLLEN does) I would be doing everything I could to ensure my bees where harvesting their pollen and nectar from non-G.E. "organic" wild flowers, natural forests, and organic crops. If you did not already know, I wish to point out the bees of this planet are dying at a rapid rate. Research "Colony Collapse Disorder" to get some idea of what I am talking about. According to an article in the Oxford Times, (quoting the article) "the most credible cause seems to implicate the widespread use of two neonicotinoid chemicals, applied to seeds. It travels systemically through the plant, and leaves residues that contaminate the pollen, resulting in bee death, paralysis or disorientation. This chemical is often applied to oil seed rape and sunflower seeds, and the French banned their use in 1999 after they identified "mad bee disease"." You can read this article here [...]
CC POLLEN state on their website (and the packaging) that they blend pollen from many areas to ensure a wide nutritional profile. I have no reason to doubt this, and commend them on that approach. Do they, however, ensure the wide collection areas they use are safe for the bees?
