A Good-Sounding Rock Cowbell, June 18, 2009
I tried about 20 different cowbells at two stores. I was looking for something that sounds good and actually sounds like a cowbell. This one beat all others, including more expensive offerings from LP.
Sound wise, it's very well balanced. It has a fundamental pitch of about Ab. The fundamental is clear and strong. But it also has the right mix of overtones to make it sound like a cowbell (lacking on some cowbells) without have painful clashing overtones (which were present on some other cowbells).
The "power flange" is an excellent alternative to the big chunk of plastic present on some LP models. The flange gives durability and definition without dampening the bell to the point of being dead.
Inside is a rubber damper that is lightly stuck on. It could be removed without effort but to me it really dampens the bell just enough. Add some Moongel or an old sock of you want to get rid of the last bit of ring. But the ring is quite pleasent.
It has just enough of everything. Very balanced, very rock. I would recommend it.
