Biography

Chris Rock is a standup comedian who first rose to national stardom when he appeared on Saturday Night Live in the late '80s and early '90s. The early '90s were Rock's popular heyday, when he frequently appeared in films; he released his first comedy record, Born Suspect, in 1991. When he left SNL, his popularity dipped, and for much of the mid-'90s, he had difficulty landing movie roles; when he… Read more in Amazon's Chris Rock Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Is Chris Rock the most brilliant stand-up comedian of our day? Without a doubt (especially seeing as Chappelle is at his best in the skit format). Is this his best record? Probably not (that would be Bigger & Blacker). Will you laugh like hell every time you listen to it? Hell yes (if you are even marginally alive, this will make you fall out!) The album consists primarily of material from his don’t-call-it-a-comeback HBO comedy special Never Scared. There are also musical parodies of cotemporary rap music that probably sounded stale the day they were recorded, and a few exclusive sketches that are worth the price of admission alone. There’s a bonus DVD with "behind the scenes footage" which is pretty good if not a little trainspotter-y. Chris Rock is clearly older, and dealing with mature guy stuff here: how to keep his daughter from becoming a stripper, how to do what his wife tells him to and retain his dignity, etc. His Michael Jackson skit is probably the only one you ever need to hear, while social commentary like "Crackers" is so right-on, the bit should be played in every 8th grade social studies class on the first day. --Mike McGonigal

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, October 4, 2009

One of the funniest things I've ever seen! I actually went to see this live in D.C. and it was even funnier in person. I still roll on the floor laughing when I watch this even though I've watched it 20 times!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, March 24, 2005
I had an argument with a guy who worked at a gas station. He was a fan of David Chapelle. I was telling him that Chris Rock is better. This music is a prefect example of that. "Off The Pole" talks about raising a daughter. Rock makes fun of rap music, Michael Jackson, and women. Rock says: "You are always going to love the music you were listening to when you first got laid." He talks about how Grandmaster Flash was art and how rap today is pretty raunchy. He says that women will dance to the most misogynous music. He says that Michael Jackson has lost his mind. He mentions that "Ed Bradley tried to make Michael Jackson look human." Chris Rock is political and thoughtful. This is his best record yet.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Nearly Complete Disappointment, December 25, 2005
By Bryan_D (Texas) - See all my reviews
We should probably all get over _Roll With The New_. Rock's most classic bits all come from that CD, and it won't be topped anytime soon. Even with that in mind, I find _Never Scared_ to be almost a total waste of time. There are some funny bits, but much of the album is Rock expressing anger or other negative emotions in a non-comic way. It really feels more like venting than comedy. Bottom line: few laughs.
