The "Discovery DNA Explorer Kit"shouldn't be considered a toy. It really is way more than that, the educational value puts it over the top. If your child is under 9 or 10, they might need adult supervision. My son is ten and has successfully mapped DNA, used the centrifuge, and performed a number of experiments with some assistance from me.
The most important thing to remember is to read the instructions very carefully, timing is very critical. Some experiments need to be tended to after a certain number of hours so starting it at night could pose a problem.
I think it's an excellent product, well made, with lots of discovery potential.

I was very pleased with the kit as was my 12 year old daughter. It was simple for her to put together and it allowed her to start working on the projects in the book right away. It is a great way for her to work on her owe and see how things work in the world around her. The project book gave step by step instructions with no confusion. The fact that most of the items in the box to help preform the projects can be bought at the local grocery store is a great help. This will allow her to be able to preform the projects over and over. The only problem we encountered was one of the test tubes scoring the inside of the plastic housing for the centrifuge. It does not effect the operation though. This is a product I would recommend to any parent who has a child interested in science.

With the exception of one of the test tubes scoring the inside if the plastic cover it is a great kit.

I gave this as an anonymous gift so I won't get personal feedback but my research suggests this is a great science kit for young teens. It includes surprisingly sophisticated, functional equipment. My source shipped the wrong product initially but were very prompt on correcting the mistake. It may be available at local B&N even cheaper. Try Ocean State Job Lot in New England, for example.
