Decent Chess Set, Bad Clock, April 24, 2010
This review is from: ChessCentral's Tournament Chess Set with Black & Ivory Chess Pieces, Black Board, Black Bag and Clock (Misc.)
Received the product today as ordered; nothing was missing. The chess pieces are substantially weighted and the board stays nice and flat even from the first roll out.
The carrying bag seems sturdy enough. A caveat I do have is the quality of the internal pouch that holds the chess pieces (not the plastic bags they come in). It holds everything quite nicely but it feels weak, like thin paper. I'm afraid that after continual use it will eventually rip and tear against the edges of the chess pieces. I'll report back on the bag and the pouch after I get to put them to use for a time.
The clock is another matter altogether. As soon as I removed the case from the box I could already hear something rattling around. After I determined the noise was from the clock (I was glad it wasn't coming from the bags that held the chess pieces) I popped it open and found that of the two clock bodies that move the clock hands, the one on the right was loose and that one of the tabs that secured it to the white clock face was broken off. Upon turning the clock over to examine the dials, I also discovered that the hour hand on that same right clock, was loose and flapping around--no doubt due to the movement of the loose clock body.
It's a simple fix to reapply the hour hand--tension keeps both the hour and minute hands secured--by just pressing it back into place at the 12 o'clock position. The clock body itself is another problem. Without the tabs to secure it in place it's free to slap around in the case. I'm now in the process of super gluing the tabs in place and gluing the clock body to the clock face. After it's all put together it should be in better shape than when I received it.
All-in-all, I'd say if you're buying this set for the addition of the clock timer, don't. It's not the best quality and you're probably better off buying the chess set and clock separately.
With an MSRP of nearly $70, you think you'd get a little better quality. The chess set and case (for the moment) get four stars. I'm taking a star off for the amount of work I have to do before I can even use the full set.
EDIT: (4/24/10, 10:24PM) Rating reduced to three stars, and title changed from "Great Chess Set, Bad Clock" to "Decent Chess Set, Bad Clock". After doing some research I found that the pieces included with this set can be bought on the cheap ($6.00 MSRP), and with the board, carrying case and clock being nothing special I don't see how this price justifies the overall quality of the set. I'll still give the purchase three stars at the moment, but that's basically for being what was advertised and nothing more. It may go down depending on how well the set stands up to use.
EDIT 2: (4/24/10, 11:04PM) Rating reduced to two stars. Weighed the king pieces on a postal scale only to find that they come in at different weights. White's king came out to 2 oz, or 56.7 grams. Black's king came out to 1.8 oz, or 51.03 grams. For $50 I'm sincerely starting to regret purchasing this set.
EDIT 3: (5/1/10, 11:03AM) Rating will remain at two stars (everything listed was received). I ended up giving this set away, and instead purchased a better tournament set with a more substantial bag/traveling case, heftier pieces, a mousepad board rather than a vinyl board, without a clock for $45.72 w/ground shipping. Sorry Amazon, but this set is a rip-off for the price (especially when the clock is cheap quality). I suggest heading over to wholesalechess.com and choosing one of the tournament sets they have over there.

Nice, weighty but, the paper on the bottom of the pieces wears off, and needs to be replaced.

Perfect Tournament Set, June 28, 2008
This review is from: ChessCentral's Tournament Chess Set with Black & Ivory Chess Pieces, Black Board, Black Bag and Clock (Misc.)
This package comes with everything you need for tournament play or just to play at home. It is regulation size (I checked)for school tournaments and also the natiional tournaments.
The products are top quality. The pieces are nicely made, the board rolls up neatly, the bag is very durable with space for all the products as well as the clock and some books.
Great value!
