5.0 out of 5 stars A classic book on jazz, August 30, 2009
By Joseph T. Porter (Redlands, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a collection of essays and profiles of important jazz musicians pre-1957. The articles were collected by legendary jazz banjo player and bandleader Eddie Condon and writer Richard Gehman. The articles are annotated with occasional comments by Condon and Gehman.
I first read this book 40 years ago when I was in the 7th grade and was starting to get interested in jazz. I've been wanting to reread this book for years and was delighted to finally have this opportunity. I especially liked the essay on Fats Waller. I was a new Fats fan and relished the chance to learn as much about him as possible. This article was a beginning for me. George T. Simon's piece on Glenn Miller was a blueprint for others writings on Miller which culminated in his full fledged biography in 1974.
Contemporary readers must be aware that the writings have a definite 1950s perspective. This should not detract from the enjoyment of the book. It might even enhance it! This book is highly recommended for serious jazz aficianados and historians.
