Parents who grew up on this sugary sweet game will notice that this DVD version diverges completely from the original, introducing a new cast of characters and a different set of rules. The candy-laden game board with the rainbow-colored path is replaced by a stack of 24 8-inch-square play mats in rainbow hues, some bearing pictures of candy and Candy Land characters. Characters appear on the included DVD in animation, where they guide kids through the three different games, providing instructions and game play challenges in either English or Spanish.
King Kandy, the ruler of all of Candy Land, requires kids to step on the correctly colored play mat as he shouts out color names in his Gumball Challenge. Mister Mint, a goofy peppermint stick man, tries to bolster kids’ listening skills with his Mister Mint Says game, a close rendition of Simon Says. And, the pleasingly plump Gramma Nutt uses the play mats for her Musical Moves game where, in a variation of Musical Chairs, children must locate a mat once the music stops playing. Kids are rewarded with gingerbread cookie tokens for a job well done.
