5.0 out of 5 stars Best Thing Since Sliced Bread, December 26, 2006

If you have a screened porch, this is a must-buy. I just bought one for my wife (and me) for Christmas. I tried it out that afternoon with a one pound propane tank (the kind you would use with a camp stove). The temp outside was about 38 degrees. I sat it on the table between the two rockers on my screened porch. It stands 39 inches high from the table top, the flame is at about 31 inches from the table top. The automatic ignition lit it, but it went out because I didn't hold the knob in long enough. The automatic ignition wouldn't light it a 2nd time, so I had to use a match and it lit right up.

This thing is quiet! It makes about as much noise as a gas stove top, so it is not noisy at all. It took a couple minutes to warm up, and then it was surprisingly warm. You would think the heat would rise up, not down, but actually the heat does radiate out and down nicely. The round cylinder you see in the pic located at the top below the bowl will glow red, and is enclosed in a screen to keep fingers out The bowl shaped umbrella overhead catches the heat and seems to push it down and out. The aluminum umbrella and the cylinder will get very hot, but the rest of the device stays cool. I sat comfortably in jeans and a sweater for about an hour with the outside temp at 38 degrees F. The thing will last about an hour and a half, maybe two hours with a 1 lb cylinder of propane. It's nice because you can pick it up and move it while it's burning - it's very portable. If you're sitting by yourself, you can even set it on the deck in front of you to give yourself symetrical and even heat.

It also comes with a hose so you can hook up a larger 20 lb tank of propane, which presumably would last 20x longer. You can buy these at Home Depot, filled, for about $48 - refills are $16. But then, of course, it's less convenient to move around. I bought one the next day and it's great. It lit with the automatic ignition the second try.

In summary, very clean heat, no excessive heat rising up to damage your screened porch ceiling. Very little noise. Well designed, well built, good assembly instructions, and easy to assemble. Very stable as it sits on the table, and very safe. Weight is about 20 pounds. Very handsome device and a nice conversation piece. I'm thinking seriously about getting another one, or maybe one of the bigger ones. If you love your screened porch and you wish you could get more use out of it during the colder months, this is a must-buy! [..]

2.0 out of 5 stars Desktop Outdoor Heater, January 11, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This heater was not for us. It requires several feet clearance on the top and sides, which a) we do not have on our patio and b) which was not indicated in the purchase information. When we tried to return the heater, we got stuck with the return-shipping cost. We asked Amazon for assistance but until now the cost of the shipping back was paid by us.

I would say that this was a frustrating experience.

One thing to be aware of when purchasing through Amazon is that many times you are not dealing with Amazon but a third party vendor who ships direct. Such was the case here. Amazon was no help in getting back our return shipping. In the future, I have decided to only purchase items from Amazon that I purchase directly from Amazon to avoid such bad experiences. Amazon has been very good about returns when I purchase them directly.

Hope this information helps others.

If you would like to contact me about my experience you may email me at gary.aknin@gmail.com.

Best regards,
Gary Aknin

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not purchase this item, January 22, 2008

I received this item, unpacked and assembled it. It worked the first few times with a standard Coleman camping size propane bottle. Hooked up the supplied hose and fittings to a full 30 gal tank. Would not lite as no gas was reaching the top burner assy. Reinstalled the Coleman bottle. Still no gas. Have emailed the seller asking for advice. No replay. Seller is Janco. Now I have to repack this unit and pay to ship it back. Amazon VISA by CHASE seems to have no provision to dispute payment on unsatisfactory merchandise. What a pain. Also, when it did work only throws out heat around 3 feet. Well I took a chance and learned.
