Biography

The career of singer Don Covay spanned virtually the entirety of the R&B spectrum, from the electrifying rock & roll of his earliest records to the gritty, swaggering deep soul of his most enduring efforts -- the scope and diversity of his catalog no doubt contributed to his failure to enjoy consistent commercial success, however, and the general public is probably better acquainted with his songs… Read more in Amazon's Don Covay Store

4.0 out of 5 stars A long overdue release, February 19, 2007
By Dr.D.Treharne (Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was the second album that Covay recorded for Mercury it's clear listening to it some 34 years after it was released that Mercury had absolutely no idea about how to promote what Covay was doing at this time. He wrote all the songs, the band were a self contained unit with lots of talent and the disk contained a range of styles. It also produced a hit single "It's better to have (and don't need)" which remains a funky gem which was mysteriously followed with "Rumble in the Jungle" a track which has aged badly, as has the bonus track "Dungeon Number 3" (about Angela Davis) and failed to chart. "We can't make it no more" and the wonderful "A mind is a terrible thing to waste" are the sets best 'slowies' with the aformentioned "It's better to have" and "Whats good for you (don't have to be good for you)" as prime chunks of funk. The four stars aren't an indication of quality so much as value, as the album is so much cheaper in the U.K.. Nonetheless it's great to have this much sought after disk available again as a great example of what happened to Covay after the glorious Atlantic Years.
