3.0 out of 5 stars Fumbled on the 99 yard line, April 2, 2007
I purchased an original X10 controller in the late 80's and an ActiveHome controller in the 90's. The Activehome controller was on its last leg so I purchased the Insteon PowerLinc controller about a year ago.

Largely, it does what I need it to do: turn lights and devices on and off at specific times and some lights on and off at sunrise/sunset.

The first problem I had with this unit (compared to its successors) is it is brain-dead when it comes to dimming the older X10 lamp modules (of which I have many). With the older controllers you programmed a light to dim to, say, 21%. With this controller you have to tell it to repeatedly send a 'dim event' and you have to send a multitude of dims events to get a lamp to dim to where you want it. There is no way to know how many dim events you must send to get the correct dim setting. It is very trial and error and difficult enough that I only dim a single light now whereas I used to dim quite a few.

I reported this problem to Smart home and they simply told me there would be no more changes to the software.

The latest problem occurred with the change in daylight savings. Now instead of the product correctly dealing with daylight savings, you have to go in and reset the clock on the new day and the old day. So 4 times a year you will end up resetting the clock. Again, no plans to fix the software. At least not any plans they are sharing with their customers.

The problems with this unit aren't major and can be fixed in software. It's a shame that Insteon isn't willing to do so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simplifies Programming Insteon dimmers, December 20, 2007
By J. Gottschalk (Gainesville, VA) - See all my reviews
This controller connects to your laptop or computer via USB and makes it easy to program all of the Insteon devices in your house (with additional software). Without this device, you can set some of the dimmer options manually, but I found it confusing and sometimes my changes didn't seem to take. To cross-link one dimmer to another, you have to set one up to listen, then run to the other one to talk; a lot of running back and forth.

This device, along with the "Homelinc" software (there are other packages available) discovers new devices, allows you to set ramp rates and on-levels for each dimmer, allows you to cross-link one dimmer to another, tests dimmer controls, saves backups of your entire configuration, and can control all lighting from the computer, either immediately or by a schedule. That's a nice feature that can cost thousands in a custom home solution!

5.0 out of 5 stars It does what it says!, June 11, 2008
By Mitch S. (Bartlett, TN) - See all my reviews
I've been using this since 12/07 along with mControl. It's hooked up to a Windows Home Server box. Install was easy, my automation software (mControl) recognized it right away. So far I only have a couple of lamplincs, applianclinc and a wall dimmer. It does it's job, highly recommended.

p.s., that other guy down there just doesn't know how to set it up :D.
