I first saw the Planetary Design mugs at the annual October 2005 Coffee Fest trade show here in Seattle, but I didn't do any research to see if their mugs were any better than the ones I've seen and owned in the past.
I saw the 12oz. tumbler up close at a local coffee shop, recently, and for curiosity, took a 'closer look'. This tumbler is almost identical to the Timolino iMug, except it is more hefty! I have a few Timolino iMugs that I'm disappointed with, because, although they're vacuum-insulated, they still lose more heat than other 'vacuum' mugs. So, I thought I'd check out the PD mug and compare.
My first obversation is that the PD tumbler is built better than the Timolino iMug. The steel interior is a heavier grade than any other mugs I've used, giving the mug a good 'weighty' feel. I decided to buy one and try it out. Similar to the Timolino, there is a little heat loss in that upper metal band, where the lid seats. Fortunately, the lid seats deeper, but the heat loss could be reduced further if the lid were slightly thicker.
I'd also note that the mug does have a rubber bottom to prevent slippage if it's placed on a flat surface.
Overall, I'd rate the Planetary Designs Tumbler mug higher than the Timolino iMug, as it is more sturdy, and has slightly better heat retention.

It keeps my coffee and tea hot for a while. The design is smaller on bottom, so it tips in my cup holder. The plastic top slider fell off.

I love this cup. I am always commenting, to anyone who will still listen to me, how hot my beverage stays. I bring this cup into a movie with tea that I have made at home and by the end of the movie whatever I have left will still be warm. At this point I make my husband drink some to see for himself. The outside of the cup is never hot.
The rubber bottom is real nice. It feels gentle when I set it down, makes for a soft landing on the counter or table.
Do not hesitate to buy this cup.
