5.0 out of 5 stars Vonderful Goot Game!!!, July 26, 2007
By Colleen "If it's not fun, what's the point?" (Rocky Mountains, Fly Over Country) - See all my reviews
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
What a blast! Four people sit around the table. Each person has their own design of cards (pump, plow, pail, or carriage). You set up your cards in front of you colored/numbered side up in three Post piles and one Blitz pile and you work off your Blitz pile taking three cards at a time and laying the trio on the "Wood" pile. If you can place the top card somewhere, either on your post piles or to start or play on a "Dutch" pile in the center of the table, then you can also try to place the next face up card. If you can't place that card anywhere then you draw three more Blitz cards and turn them over on the Wood pile again and keep doing this trying to get rid of those Blitz cards. Once a person's Blitz pile is gone the game is over for everyone. You can depleat your Blitz pile by playing them onto your Post piles and/or putting them out in the center of the table for everyone to play on (Dutch piles). The cards laid in the middle of the table must start with an ace and are played on by all the players each laying down the next number in sequence and matching the color. Your own personal Post piles work differently.

Sometimes the game gets stuck where there are no cards in the center for anyone to play on, then someone will finally get an ace to lay out in the center and the game goes wild. It gets to be a hairied, frenzied, free-for-all where you either find yourself on a roll pitching your whole pile out to the various card piles in the center of the table, or you watch in stunned screams as someone else depleats all their cards so fast that you're just paralyzed and powerless to stop them. Once someone goes out all the cards that you have left in your Blitz pile get tallied. The Dutch pile cards get sorted back into their designs and the those go back to the owners, are counted and recored. Your Blitz total gets subtracted from the cards you managed to play in the center, and the scores are written down. Now everbody shuffles their cards and the mania starts all over again. The first person to reach a score of 75 wins.

I threw an OKTOBERFEST party where I purchased several of these Dutch Blitz games and set up card tables all over the house. I decorated in the traditional blue and white diamond checked table clothes. I made homemade pretzels and served German beers (several varieties to sample), and served authentic brats and kraut and German potato salad, and fruit kuchen's and German chocolate cake for dessert. I had a beer drinking music CD in the boom box (see my other reviews) and we played cards all night. In between dinner and dessert I made everyone get up and stand in a big circle and I put on THE CHICKEN DANCE SONG for us to dance to. Kudos to my crowd that they obliged my lunacy and we laughed and clucked our way back and forth around that circle, then we Oom-pah-pah line danced into the kitchen for dessert and then back to our tables for more Dutch Blitz. One of those choking chickens that plays the chicken dance would have been fun to toss around, but I didn't come across those until months after my party.

I sent everyone home with their own Dutch Blitz game and a fruit kuchen. They all had smiles on their faces and thanked me for a fun party. So next October, have yourself a Dutch Blitz OKTOBERFEST. Wonderbar!

This is also a great family game. Also a good game to take on a trip, or camping, or to grandma's house.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is always fun, November 29, 2005
I have played Dutch Blitz since I was a little girl. It is fun and fast-paced.

Only up to 4 people can play at one time. Each person picks a set of cards. You have one main pile of cards and 3 individual cards lined up beside it. The rest of the cards you have in your hand. The object of the game is to get rid of all of your cards first by placing them out on the table in order from 1 to 10, matching the right color. Little kids and adults love this game. It is harder for little children to play with adults because they aren't as fast. I usually try to slow down a bit. When I've played with friends and family, there are usually cards flying and hands being smacked as someone tries to put their card down first.

I don't know if this game is hard to find or not. I live in the Pennsylvania Dutch area and I can find it here but I don't know about other areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Variations to the game, August 24, 2006
While the game is designed to be played with 4 people, you CAN play with more. I've been involved in games with 20+!

One easy way is to play partners. Two people on a team - one plays the cards laid out, the other the 'dealing' hand.

Another way is with multiple decks. Just mark all the cards in the extra deck with a notation of some type so you can distinguish between the marked & unmarked sets. This way you can easily have two, three, or more decks going on at the same time in one giant game.

Combine the multiple decks with teams, sit around a big table, and you've got a crazy game with dozens of people.

Enjoy!
