2.0 out of 5 stars Works great but broke after 4 uses., January 23, 2008
This review is from: Thule 232 Step Up Wheel Step (Sports)
This step is a great idea for those who put their skis/snowboards on the roof of the SUV. We used to stand on the tire itself or on the 2nd row seats but decided there had to be a better way. This step is easy to adjust and feels very stable. Now we don't have to do the gymnastics any more.

Now the bad news. We used it at the house to load up, at the slopes to unload and to reload and then at home again to unload. A weld on one of the buckles broke making the step unusable. The unit is riveted together so there is no way to replace just the broken part. Thule has a good warranty and Amazon has provided great support. Amazon is sending out a replacement. Hopefully the new one won't develop the same problem.

This works like described. I ended up not using it because I can open the sliding door on the van and stand there, which works fine. I'm kinda a big guy and if I moved around on this platform the whole car rocked back and forth a few inches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thule Step Up Broke and Sits Too Low On Tire, April 6, 2010
By Kingmonkey (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thule 232 Step Up Wheel Step (Sports)
I bought this to be able to stand on it and reach over to put my snowboards atop my Honda Pilot. It works as described, but then the day of the trip I stood on it and the rivet that held the side strap together on one end broke; this rivet was not welded but clamped closed, so naturally my weight (only 135 pounds!) snapped it open. I had to scurry and find a pair of pliers and squeeze it back together and use it carefully during that trip. But I found out that I can step on my car sidestep after opening the passenger door and still reach the top and also be a few inches higher than what the Thule would have provided (although by stepping there I am a few inches away from where the Thule would have put me on top of (right above the back tire compared to a few inches forward so I had to reach a little).

When I got home I found a welder and welded together the clamps (cost $20 total, probably got ripped off but I did not have much choices of a welder and did not want to buy all the equipment and learn to weld for this one instance). Welding the clamps together should prevent the side clamps from opening up again.
