Two sets of these for my son on his 4th birthday and he's building incredible things. These beat legos by far because when you step on these in the middle of the night, your feet are fine! We actually purchased him a third set because I enjoy the creativity.

It takes practice and time and patience. At first I wished the tiles had stronger magnets, but now I've come to understand and explain to my son how you build with structure and support for tall objects...just like in the real world. Some of the creations he comes up with...WOW. Once I taught him how to add support structure, he took off. Now most evenings I get asked to "close my eyes and come into the play area."

Best toy ever. No exaggeration. My 3-year-old has been interested in these for over a year now and it never gets old. Unlike other toys which collect dust on the shelf after the first few uses, this is a toy that he keeps returning to day after day. Yes, they are quite pricey and I'm as frugal as they come, but they are so worth the investment. They are much more than a toy-- they are definitely intellectually-stimulating and educational. My little one thinks of new ways to use them everyday (one day he'll use them to build a tunnel for his trains, and the next day he'll build a castle for his figurines, another day he'll build a giant crocodile or a tall tower, etc). There are so many ways to play with these and use your creativity and imagination. As a parent, I love them and feel good about the fact that he's learning about math, geometry, and a whole lot more without even knowing that he is doing it. My husband and I often find some of his toys a little boring after a while, but this is a toy that we can genuinely have fun with ourselves. We love to watch our little architect-in-training building with his Magnatiles. I have seen cheaper alternatives offered, but I can attest to the quality and durability of these tiles (our son can get a little rough when playing sometimes and these tiles have endured a lot but we have not broken a single tile to date).

Initially my wife and I were a skeptic, how could this rather pricey toy be so cool that it has hundreds of positive reviews. Well, six months later my kids are still playing with these, so a toy with staying power is a rare find and something I like (especially given the price of these things). The kids get creative making houses, hotels, parking lots, tunnels etc. The two year old mostly builds flat 2D things, the 5 year old is a little more creative with 3D objects. One thing we don't like is how easily the magna tiles collapse if you build a multi-story building. Legos these are not, it will collapse like a house of cards if there's a weak point or you wobble the surface you are building on -- thus minus 1 star.

These are AWESOME! My grandsons love them. I just bought these so they can each have their own set. I read about them in a magazine, which gave them fantastic reviews. So, had to get them! I recommend buying the set of just the squares in addition to this. Set is fine without buying extra but much better to have these in addition to the larger sets. Kind of pricey but worth it!

It took me awhile to buy these because they are expensive but I am so glad that I did. My 3 kids all love to build with them. My almost 3 year old takes them out at least once a day to build a house or a garage or a castle. They are great for fine motor skills and spacial skills. I love how these magna-tiles encourage creativity and open ended play. I highly recommend these even at the high cost.

Yaacov Agam, an artist who is primarily known for his contributions to optical and kinetic art, once declared that "Children are visually illiterate." Perhaps there is a grain of truth to that, perhaps a whole silo. In my experience, both as a parent and a teacher, children don't become aware of the fascinating world of geometric shapes until they land in a high school geometry class. Of course with Magna-Tiles the world of spatial and geometric thinking open up a whole new world at a very young age.

The educational value of Magna-Tiles is enormous and Agram himself would be pleased to see them in any homeschool or classroom setting. Yes, they do find their home in educational settings, but more often are used as building blocks to education as a building toy. Children learn about basic geometric concepts during play while learning about shapes and their properties without having specific instruction.

It's "simple" as we listen about a "creation," yet the associated relationship of properties seems anything but if you're struggling to learn about them in one's teen years as opposed to learning about them when you are a seven-year-old. Magna-Tiles are a toy, but so much more than that.

There are problems with the tiles, but not in the manner you would think. The problem with Magna-Tiles, according to a friend is that "I have to argue with them to stop playing." It's almost like having to argue with a youngster that it's time to lay off doing so much homework. Can't get much better than that. Once hooked, kids don't want to leave their work and creations behind. Those shapes are just too alluring, too interesting, but certainly not considered educational, least ways by young creators.

The Magna-Tiles are a very interesting creation themselves.
