Editorial Reviews

From the Actor

April 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake and San Andreas Films with CAV Media Studios is ready with a one-hour documentary narrated by Peter called "Damnedest Finest Ruins." Produced by Bob Burton and author James Dalessandro, the film brings the historical characters and events of the past into the present with realism through storytelling. A screening will take place on Sunday, June 11, at the Oakland Museum of California. -- Peter Coyote

Product Description

On April 18, 1906, a massive earthquake struck Northern California. In three terrible days San Francisco, the “Paris of the Pacific,” was wiped from the earth. Narrated by acclaimed actor Peter Coyote, The Damnedest, Finest Ruins paints a riveting portrait of courage and chaos. James Dalessandro, author of the best selling novel, 1906, uses rare photos and actual film of the disaster to create a captivating story of human courage and political incompetence, underscored by the music of Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, who performed five hours before the disaster and barely made it out alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing documentary on the 1906 Earthquake!!!, April 27, 2006
I was very pleased with this documentary on the 1906 San Francisco/Bay area Earthquake and Fire. It was very informative and entertaining film. The film had great sound, awesome visuals & shocking pictures of the 1906 Earthquake. There were many photos of this earthquake and fire that I have never seen before. I was very impressed and would highly recommend this documentary to anyone looking for a true account of the events surrounding the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.

5 stars for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing!, October 14, 2006
I just saw this movie this morning on the big screen at the Bend Film Festival: I highly recommend it. The filmmakers used archival photographs and films of this devastating event, documenting what happened soon after the 53 second earthquake: fires, exacerbated by the dynamite that was used supposedly to prevent fires. The parallels with the response to Katrina in New Orleans can't be ignored: decades of warnings by experts and smaller natural disasters; building homes in unsafe areas or without regard to how residents would be evacuated, etc.

See this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent documentary about the 1906 SF earthquake!, July 2, 2006
By Night Stalker "HH" (San Francisco, CA.) - See all my reviews
I just bought the DVD at a shop near Fisherman's Warf, SF and was very pleased with this new documentary about the great San Francisco eartquake and fire of 1906, they start by telling a story of SF early history and how it prospered and grew during the Ca gold rush era and also they tell of how the quake caused damages all the way down in San Jose and up to Fort Bragg.

the musical score they used for the film was very good and went well with the story, very nostalgic sounding.

lots of interesting photos that most people have never seen before, I thought this was going to be a re-hash of previous documentaries Ive seen, but it was totally different, a must see for anybody interested in the history of old SF.

the narration was excellent!
