About Hamilton
Founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892, the Hamilton watch company has a history that parallels American history itself. Hamilton crafted watches for the railroad industry at the turn of the century, for the major airlines during the commercial aviation boom of the 1930s, and for American soldiers during both world wars. Ever since Elvis Presley sported a Hamilton Ventura in his film Blue Hawaii, Hamilton has been closely tied with Hollywood. Hamilton created the futuristic timepieces for Stanley Kubrick's classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and its watches have been featured in more recent blockbusters, including Men In Black and Lethal Weapon. The Hamilton brand consists of two distinct lines. The American Classics collection combines elegance with a dash of nostalgia for the golden age of Hollywood, while the sporty Khaki collection, inspired by the original wartime watches, is technical, adventurous and tough. All Hamilton watches are expertly crafted, using precision Swiss watch movements.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Watch but is it American, Swiss, or Chinese?, May 23, 2009
By teamsc10190 (Temecula, CA) - See all my reviews
I've owned this watch for nine months now and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a ruggedly handsome design that looks great paired with casual apparel. Easy to read, and keeping accurate time as you'd expect from a battery-driven quartz watch.

I recently needed to open the case to change out the battery after only nine months of operation and can now hopefully clear up some confusion as to the origins of modern Hamilton watches.

The watch bears the Hamilton name and the marketing verbiage trades heavily on Hamilton's American heritage as an old-line manufacturer building high quality pocketwatches and wristwatches in Lebanon, PA since 1892. The fact is the Hamilton Watch Company completely ceased its American manufacturing operations in 1969. Thereafter ownership of the Hamilton name has been in Swiss hands, ultimately winding up owned by The Swatch Group Ltd. in the late 1990's.

The backside of the watch case states that it is Swiss-made but I think this is misleading. It is a Swiss-made quartz movement, housed in a Chinese case, with an American-inspired design. Honestly not much of a value for it's $395 MSRP, but an attractive and solid value for $105.

I'd buy this watch again for $105, but I wouldn't consider it for more than that. I'd bought a similarly styled Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Canvas Strap Watch #BM8180-03E off Amazon for $81 that I think is a much better value and never needs batteries, although I prefer the leather strap of the Hamilton.

So lets be accurate; this is a Swiss-Chinese watch with a mass-produced quartz movement. It's not a bad thing, as the watch is quite nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch, July 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Looks nice, but the band was too short for my massive wrist. One thing I didn't like about the watch is the second hand (which is really the 3rd hand, that indicates seconds) does a "loose bounce" occasionally, as it sweeps around the dial (like you might see on a large wall clock that has a "3rd" hand). Did that qualify for a run-on sentence? Not a very good indication of a high quality movement. It does keep good time, however. Woulda like to have found a screw in crown instead of the standard pull/pop out style. Glad I bought it instead of the Seiko or Citizens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tastefully understated, classic good looks, great value, April 2, 2009
By Richard R. Loya (Redmond, WA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had this watch for about a month now. Time and date are easy to read and adjust. Function has been excellent.

The style is versatile, and goes easily with either a suit, or a pair of jeans. The leather band has heft, and a substantive feel of quality. Other reviews noted a strong leather scent from the band. I have not noticed this.

One pleasant surprise is the the hands and numerals are luminous. This feature was not listed in the Product Description.

I am pleased with the purchase, and would recommend it to a friend.
