I have been in the cabinet making industry for over 15 years and I have purchased almost every kind of tape there is on the market including all of the Stanley's, Lufkin, etc. I have not been happy with most tapes due to: pre-mature tape cracking, locking device breakage, the tape will not re-coil all of the way, and inconsistent or messy measurement markings (sometimes you have to pull the tape out a ways to check for line bleeding). The Irwin has lasted the longest out of all of the tapes and has clear, consistent markings on the top and bottom (which comes in handy for my line of work). The graphite on the bottom of the tape also makes it easy to mark for studs on drywall. The one downfall is the weight, however, I have dropped it more than a few times and the casing did not crack or break as it is constructed out of a solid metal-like plate. The standout is not as good as the Fat Max but depending on what you are doing, it gets the job done.

No grab spikes on the end of tape to hold as you reel it out. Dropped it 6' off ladder onto my lawn and it broke. The small zinc split fastener that holds the spring tension snapped. Poor design and quality for the money. Save yourself the aggravation.

I have been looking for the perfect tape measure for some time now. I have tried various brands with all different bells and whistles. When I picked up this one in a store I thought I had found it.

I love the white tape, it seems much easier to read than the yellow tapes. The tape is marked top and bottom. This is excellent when needing very accurate measurements (think fine furniture building). Though I did not like the graphite marking nub at first, I came to appreciate it for rough work.

However, as with many other reviewers for no reason the rod that held held the spring in place broke making the tape useless.

I still gave this unit 3 stars for for the features. I am considering buying one or two more and attempting to replace the spring hold down with something that will not break.
