Format: Hardcover
An exciting history of the imposing and dark Tower of London, full of exciting and tragic episodes and real life stories. It tells much of the history of England itself from the White Tower constructed on the orders of William the Conqueror in 1078. It has imprisoned such figures as Scottish and French kings, Richard II of England, the young princes and heirs to the throne imprisoned by Richard III, sir Thomas More, Bishop John Fisher, Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Lady Jane Grey, Elizabeth I before she was queen by her jealous and paranoid sister Bloody Mary I, Guy Fawkes and Sir Walter Raleigh. This book tells their stories. The last prisoner there was the Nazi Deputy Fuhrer, Rudolf Hess in 1940.
It tells of the history behind these events. The tower of London has been a prison, a royal residence, held the royal treasures (which are displayed in this book which is filled with photographs and illustrations) and as site of executions, rebellions, disasters, bombings and alleged ghostly hauntings.

This book is divided into seven chapters as well as a section on the literature surrounding the Tower of London, with excerpts from Shakespeare, Maxwell Anderson, Sir Walter Scott, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. It is followed by a guide to the tower and a chronology, Exciting, compelling and informative.

I just read this book from cover to cover. It was so interesting and informative that I could barely put it down. The writing was excellent. It also contains photographs, paintings, drawings, and first-hand accounts of incidents that took place in the Tower. I learned a great deal, not only about the Tower, but about many of its famous inhabitants. This book is a must for all serious anglophiles. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Hibbert's books. His knowledge of The Tower and the way he conveys it is remarkable.

A 1971 Newsweek "Wonders of Man" publication that I bought as a followup to a trip to London and visit to the Tower and other historical and personal areas of interest. Since the historical part of the Tower hasn't changed since 1971, it served well. I reflect upon how in the 1,000 year history of the Tower the brief life of Henry VIII overshadowed and somehow epitomized its history. I wonder if we will understand ourselves well enough to save our species, civilization, and life as we know it on Earth. It is a dark view from the Tower.

I can't recommend this book. It's a cursory treatment that actually dates to 1971 and is probably long since rendered obsolete by fresh research.
