Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2006 14-track Malcolm Cecil U.K. release features remastered versions of all tracks from the 1971 Robert Margouleff/Malcolm Cecil collaboration, ZERO TIME, as well as edited, retitled versions of their 1975 LP, IT'S ABOUT TIME, as well as a bonus track ("Bittersweet"). The computer set-up responsible for the Tonto sound was considered ground-breaking at the time and led to Margouleff and Cecil providing a signature sound that drove Stevie Wonder's sales in the stratosphere beginning with MUSIC OF MY MIND all the way through JUNGLE FEVER. Subsequent to IT'S ABOUT TIME, though, Margouleff sold his interest in the Tonto set-up to Cecil; thus the absence of his name with this 2006 compilation that was released by Malcolm Cecil in connection with an August 2006 London performance. Track listing: 1. Cybernaut; 2. Jetsex; 3. Timewhys; 4. Aurora; 5. Riversong; 6. Tama; 7. Bittersweet; 8. Ferryboat; 9. Pyramodal; 10. Cameltrain; 11. Judgementor; 12. Freeflight; 13. Tontomotion; and 14. Tranquillium. All titles composed, performed, produced & engineered by Malcolm Cecil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful re-issue!, March 3, 2007
By DSR (out beyond the sticks) - See all my reviews

I wrote a lengthy plea for this music to be re- released on the "Tonto Rides Again" compilation for Amazon and now it has; hopefully not in a limited edition...

Malcolm Cecil has done a good job of the remastering, from the original tapes apparently, erring towards emphasising the warmth and power of the Tonto instrument, rather than the crystaline clarity which modern "synth" recordings seem to favour. I think that this suits the vintage nature of the recordings well, especially those that comprise the first album. Compared to my LP's, TONTO has NEVER sounded better!

Sincere thanks to Malcolm Cecil for re- issuing this material again.

Any fan of "Electronic Music" ought to have a copy of this CD, as it was early recordings like these that showed us that a big modular synth system was FAR more than just a rich man's toy, or a scientific, rather than musical, instrument. The music here still stands up extremely well too, being more "spaced out" than "spacey", if you see what I mean...

RECOMMENDED WITH PASSION!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I expected..., June 9, 2009
I may not have heard it like I did in the '70s with a good LP setup; but my digital equipment is junk, so I'm not blaming the CD for that. Got the package quick and really got mellow with the TONTO!! Really brought back memories; think I'll put it in my Tahoe when I'm on the road.

I miss that early electronic sound; especially the Zero Time Album. Good thing my brother still has it, I think its time to fire up a good LP album session and compare the quality on a decent system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Analogue bliss., February 19, 2009
I had heard of the tonto's many years ago in a review by a synth music catalogue. It was my intention to try them then but i never got around to it.I'm happy to say that i have now joined the ranks, albeit cultish ranks of a blissful sonic soundscape that was created by two maestro's who coaxed out dreamy textures from the analogue giant that is tonto.Being a huge fan of most electronic music eg Tangerine Dream,Jarre,Kraftwerk and an excellent british scene(Mark Shreeve,Omega Syndicate et al)this is a pleasant look and listen to the early days of a burgeoning genre that would quickly find it's rightful place in the contemparary music scene. For anyone who has a taste for electronic music, especially for music that has a leaning towards ambient, should certainly give this a spin,i'm sure you will not be disappointed.Hi Ho Silver away.
