One thousand years ago a small Saxon army fought a bloody engagement against Viking raiders along the coast of eastern England. The Battle of Maldon, fought in 991, is commerorated in an Old English poem of the same name. In this new translation, the poet and teacher Samuel Salerno re-introduces a relatively unknown work from an often neglected period in the history of English letters. The poem, an account of the death of the Saxon thane Byrhtnoth and the last stand of his outnumbered army, is a lasting testament to the heroic ideal in which loyalty is all, and where doomed men together face the quandaries of living and dying honorably in the face of a seemingly futile struggle.
