3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough, August 20, 2009
I used the program in preparation for a trip with a group of students to Copenhagen. On the positive side, I think that the verbal recognition program is outstanding. The voice patterns give you excellent cues on how to modulate your voice to achieve the best articulation. This alone is worth buying the program. There are other aspects of the way the program is designed which I felt significantly diminished its value. First, while some people learn by repetition, I want to know the language and grammar rules which are being illustrated. This would have helped me immensely in understanding what I was trying to say. Secondly, I wish the dialogue related to actual people, places, and situations a traveler would face. I got tired of saying "the rodeo cowboy fell off his horse". How the phrase "the bus is stuck on the curb" would help me is a mystery. Lastly, I would have liked to have had some discussion of language traditions that are part of a dining like learning to say thank you for the meal in Danish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, March 2, 2009
By Heidi (Wisconsin United States) - See all my reviews
I purchased this program truly skeptical of the great things I had heard about it, but needing to try anything because I needed to learn Danish, learn it well, and learn it independently and around my work schedule.

I have learned a lot of languages over the years in school (Spanish, German) and by just living in a country and hearing it without having learned anything else beyond "Hi, how are you?". And this program is absolutely the easiest way I have learned a language as well as the most thorough.

I don't think that any language would be out of anyone's reach with this program.

The program is fairly user friendly. It might be really user-friendly if I were a manual reading person (the instruction manual). Even my mother, who doesn't own a computer, doesn't use one, and never has, was able to sit down and with 2 sentences in instruction from me, she was able to use this program easily and quickly.

I also love that it allows you to go through a lesson and learn it in the manner that you need the most, or in the manner that best suits your learning style For example, I learn best visually, so I like hearing the phrases while seeing them on the screen. But what really completes my own retention is the learning option of going back over the phrases and trying to type them on my own while hearing them spoken by the computer program. This option for me will have the greatest impact on the extent to which I become fluent and the ease of which this occurs.

That being said, there are 3 other learning styles and options to accomodate a wide variety of learning styles, learning needs, and learning preferences.

I also like that when you are done with a particular segment you can quiz yourself in multiple ways. And I like that if I feel I would like to go over a particular unit again, I can move around as I wish in the lessons and units.

As far as the voice recognition aspect, this would be the only part I am unsure on. To be fair, it is possible that if I read the instruction manual I would know what to do with the information given to me with this option. It does work. You can hear and see how your way of saying what was said differs from a native speaker. However, I just don't know exactly what I am supposed to do about it or how to alter my voice to alter the sound wave pattern on the screen. I have the flexibility though of being imperfect for a little bit when I get to Denmark, while also knowing absolutely that the slight imperfection is perfectly acceptable and I will be understood.

I really love this program and will use it in the future for any and all other languages that I might want to learn. I also intend to purchase the full set on Spanish for my child who is learning Spanish in school. I love this program so much I spend time trying to come up with really good reasons for learning a bunch of different languages in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and interactive way to learn a language, but not perfect, July 22, 2009
By Gabriel E. Borlean (Odense, Denmark - birthtown of fairytale writer H.C. Anderson) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
INTRODUCTION:
I bought the Rosetta Stone Danish program (version 2, Level 1) with the intent on learning my wife's native tongue and being able to communicate with her parents and family & friends in Denmark.

POSITIVES:
I enjoy the philosophy (and paradigm) behind the Rosetta Stone. One learns a language like a child would: with lots of repetitions, lots of visual and auditory stimulation, and a fun format.

CONTENT:
The Rosetta Stone box comes with 2 software CDs (one is to install the Rosetta Stone program and the 2nd CD is the one that contains the language; one has to have the language CD to make use of the program). Also included in the box is a set of headphones and an instructional manual and how to install and use the program.

The language CD has 8 units. The first 4 units have 10 lessons and 1 review lesson each. The last 4 units have 11 lessons and 1 review lesson each. Within each lesson one will find 5 skills: A) LISTENING AND READING with 4 exercises, B) LISTENING with 2 exercises, C) READING with 2 exercises, D) SPEAKING with 1 exercise, and E) SPELLING with 4 exercises. One can also customize each skill to be done blindfolded or not, timed or not, and a bonus test. Overall the program is very interactive, repetitive, and fun.

NEGATIVES:
This software and language is ONLY offered in Level 1 (Level 2, and 3 do not exist yet), and while many of the other languages offered by Rosetta Stone (like Spanish, German, French, etc.) have migrated to Version 3, this language program has not.

The other downside is that it does have errors. For example in Unit 1, the phrase "Hvad farve" (what color) is used instead of "Hvilken farve" (which color). Another example is in Unit 2, the possesives "sin" and "hendes" (both meaning his/her) are interchanged and used in some confusing ways. Worth mentioning also, is that the different speakers who pronounce the words show their true regional origin (man pronouncing "cowboyen" must be from Jylland). Intermittently during the use of the language CD, the drive makes a loud spinning noise.

CONCLUSION:
Overall I would like to give this product a 5 stars review, but due to the downsides listed above I have only given it 4 stars. I look forward to the future versions of Danish and hope to be on a Danish conversational level very soon.
