2.0 out of 5 stars Perfect illustration of the great/awful polarity of this show, October 28, 2007

THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM is without any question one of the most wildly inconsistent shows in the history of TV. There are episodes that are so funny that I think I'll injure myself laughing. But there are other episodes -- usually episodes with a high "ick" factor -- where I not only don't crack a smile, but moan and groan. This was one of the latter. The show revolves around Sarah's violating taboos of one sort or another. The previous episode was incredibly funny, as Sarah joins the campaign against baby killing without realizing that that was what the others were calling abortion (when Sarah realizes her mistake she quickly pulls out, stating to the others that she had had a couple of abortions herself and couldn't oppose it now because at some point she might need another). But licking a part of a dog's anatomy isn't at all funny. It is just icky. And usually when Sarah Silverman gets into mere ickiness instead of human moral debates, she gets unfunny.

In the "Where do I know them from" category, the man in rehab for dropping cats out of windows was played by Ken Marino, who has been in a host of TV roles, most recently as a recurring character on VERONICA MARS as Detective Vinnie Van Lowe.

All in all, I would stronlgy recommend a skip on this episode. Rewatch the season premiere instead.

On the upside, with this episode the series continues with its tradition of doing shows that no other show in the history of TV either has or would dream of touching. As if that were necessarily a good thing. This remains the show on TV I'm most ambivalent about. It can be either one of the funniest or one of the worst shows on TV. On the upside, if you hated one episode, wait a week and you'll find something to love; on the downside, if you loved it this week, you may feel differently about the next episode.
