3.0 out of 5 stars Great if you don't have to swap the drives out very often., October 16, 2009

This review is from: Sas 3.5 Hotswap (Usb 1394A And 1394B) Sataii 2 Hard Drives In 1 Enclosure (Electronics)
PROS: I was looking for a simple JBOD storage device with Firewire 800. Plugged it in, worked like a charm.

The fan is quiet and keeps the drives cool (using 2 1TB drives). I love that the power supply is built into it... no power brick to mess with.

CONS:

My only complaint is that the trays for the drives are a pain. They provide you with a "special tool" to open the trays to remove them (you can't remove them without it). A strong paper clip might be used in it's place. But, again, this is the only way to remove the drive. Otherwise they are locked in place.

Once you get the bracket with the drive out, the drive must be screwed into the bracket before you can use it.

After using a Drobo; the removing and adding drives on this thing is painful. You should be able to hit a button to pop a drive out and just snap a new one in. Why they felt you should need a special tool and screws to add/remove a drive I will never know.

UPDATE: (Aug. 2010)

The case failed on me after 10 months. The fan on the back stopped for some amount of time and overheated. My hard drives were not reading correctly and causing odd system pauses, etc. I thought I lost both the drives from the heat. After buying a new (different) hard drive enclosure and putting the drives in there, the drives appear to be ok. It looks like the little bit of hardware in the case has been damaged from overheating though. The fan works again after banging it a few times, but it still won't work correctly after the overheating.
