5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner's Kit!, January 21, 2009
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This is a great kit if you're just getting into painting miniatures. You certainly can't beat the price for what you get. You get brushes, far more paint than you'll need for the figures and two metal figures! This is probably one of the better kits out there for painting that I've seen.

The figures don't require any assembly, but you will need to go through the normal beginning steps to prepare the miniature for painting. You need to remove the excess flash and you'll definitely need to file down any noticeable mold lines. The instruction manual tells you to do this as the first step. However, the fact that these are whole miniatures and no assembly is required means you can get to the painting a lot faster. Removing flash and mold lines are just a good habit to get into, so it's actually beneficial that they leave this on.

From there they have you priming the figures and then give you very detailed instructions on how to paint. The Reaper primer they provide is only in white and you can get a bottle of black individually if you'd rather use that as your medium to provide deeper shadows. The White brush on primer wasn't as good in my opinion and I prefer to use Citadel "Skull White" spray on primer to prime most of the body and then use the Reaper brush on primer to touch up the spots the spray can missed. I found this gives a more solidly primed figure and I think the Citadel primer worked better with having the paint stick to it best. I also did this with Citadel's "Chaos Black" primer when I wanted it primed in black, then using the Reaper black brush on primer to touch up the figures.

Whichever way you decide to do it is up to you. However, at this point you are now ready to delve into painting the miniatures. You have two figures to paint and the instructions go over fairly beginner techniques. You learn basic shading, layering and it even delves into learning how to dry brush. Dry brushing might take a while to learn and I think I'll need a lot more practice on that technique. The only thing I don't recommend beginners do is to paint the eyes onto the soldier. This is usually an incredibly difficult thing to learn how to do and this instruction book has you start off with that! At the very least I think they should've included the eye lesson at the end after you had the rest of the figure painted, instead of me spending a large amount of time practicing this and not getting it right, while the rest of my miniature remains unpainted.

I hope that's some helpful advice for people on a few things I tried out with this little kit and aside from the instructions on the soldiers face; this is a great beginner's kit. Even if you're miniature doesn't look exactly like that shown in the photo, you've just started down the path of miniatures painting. Some people will need more practice than others and I think the Reaper kits are a great place to start off regardless of your innate painting skill. I look forward to trying out "Kit 2" to continue my learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars great value, October 28, 2008

I recently purchased this painting set to learn how to paint miniatures. This is a great set to start learning the basics. It comes with a step by step instructions book with tips on painting fantasy miniatures. It includes paints, brushes, booklet and of coarse the figures. The figures themselves are of good quality metal. I would recomend this painting set to anyone just starting out or an intermediate painter.
