3.6 out of 5 stars (7) IMDb 5.2/10

At the most notorious club in the United States, the club's owner is shot to death. Young club jockey Larry Sturgis (Darrow) is falsely accused and convicted of the crime, due only to his bad reputation. Having suffered ten years on a chain gang in prison, a freak accident allows Larry to fake his death and escape. Larry heads to the gilded world of Monte Carlo, where the real killer is, a man named James Dagger, known for his bank robberies and compusive gambling. Larry manages to gain help in his investigation to clear his name from local police Inspector Ned Gunby. The two become involved in deadly adventures, including a daring escape by leaping off a train crossing a bridge. An exciting adventure thriller in the style of Alfred Hitchcock.

ALPHA VIDEO offers bargain priced, often hard-to-find vintage movies that are ideal for those willing to skip DVD extras. Their transfers show no evidence of restoration, so quality varies from one title to the next, with "fair to good" being the average.

Niche market DVD-R mfr REEL ENTERPRISES offers no commentary, deleted scenes or other bonus features. Dubs are of similar quality to ALPHA.

In this early MONOGRAM programmer, a successful roulette player visiting the casino to collect his winnings is seen standing over a dead man with a pistol in his hand. He's arrested, convicted, and escapes from the train bringing him to his ten-year prison cell home. Cleverly throwing the cops off his trail, the fugitive returns to Monte Carlo to hunt for the actual killer.

Meanwhile, a police inspector (whiskerless Gabby Hayes) investigating the men who were playing roulette the night of the murder spots the escaped convict in the casino.

Also from ALPHA:
In Charles Lamont's THE DARK HOUR (1936), two detectives investigating the murder of an elderly millionaire are presented with a number of suspects, all of whom have motives for homicide.

"Monte Carlo Nights" is an old watchable movie. I wasn't expecting a great deal when I selected this film, but was pleasantly surprised. It was interesting to see one of the main characters, George Hays playing a role other than his usual "Gabby" performances with his butchered diction that he's so recognized for in a plethora of old westerns.

It's fun watching a movie without big name stars! This one kept my interest throughout even though a few parts weren't quite believable. I liked the irony of the "Goodie Two Shoes" gambling in the end and loving it!

Love old movies, they pack in a lot in about an hour.
