3.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch, but it's not worth $500, January 17, 2010
By Arthur Simon (Albany, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the rubber strap version for about a year and half now. I paid $278 for mine in April of 2008. It's a nice watch, and comparable in quality to similar models from Seiko and Citizen, though it has its quirks.

It's loaded with features. It's the only other watch I know of besides the long discontinued Citizen Aerochron to have both an altimeter and slide rule, two features that I find useful. I can't speak to the accuracy of the altimeter, but the "reference mode" works just as it should, letting you recalibrate the altimeter when you reach a known elevation. I don't know what the "absolute altitude mode" is useful for. It doesn't allow the altimeter to be recalibrated, and changes in barometric pressure will throw the altimeter off. Slide rule accuracy is good, with the tick marks lining up all around the bezel. Navigating through the modes is confusing, and I still find that I need to pull out the manual to figure out how to navigate from one mode to another.

The watch is not without it's idiosyncrasies. While nowhere on the watch or strap is there any indication of the country of manufacture (probably China), it seems to be the product of Swiss design, as it preserves the Swiss reputation for doing things their own way. The functions of the four buttons on the side are different than you'd expect if the watch was made by Casio, Seiko or Citizen, and it took me a while with the poorly written manual (which is riddled with misspelled words) to figure things out. For example, the bottom right button is used to start and stop the stopwatch, unlike every other digital watch I've owned which uses the top right button. The date can only be displayed in the European format; day of month followed by month.

There's a handy "key lock." Holding the bottom left button for 3 seconds disables all the buttons except if the alarm should go off. (How maddening if you couldn't turn off the alarm!) Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anyway to disable the beeps that accompany button presses, even with the key lock enabled. There is a screw down crown for the completely separate analog display, but the other buttons don't screw down. The digital display can be blanked out. The Barometer has an alarm feature that can be used to warn of an approaching storm.

Replacement straps are expensive, I've seen prices from $75 up on ebay for the genuine Sector rubber strap. I fitted a 24mm 5 ring nylon "zulu" strap, and it's a tight fit. The spring bars are close to the watch case, so they curved a bit under the pressure of the nylon band. Still it held just fine and I wore that band for months, so the zulu bands are an economical replacement if you need a new strap.

The backlight is excellent, but the luminescence is poor. The digital display is the most attractive I've seen, and it's highly legible. It's big and heavy, but not awkward. For some reason it's a fingerprint magnet, and the crystal always seemed smudged. It's also not as resistant to scratches as I'd like. Still, it's awfully good looking when it's shined up, and it continues to look good a year and half later.
