Product Description

When mad sorcerers open a gateway to the very pits of hell, releasing outre demons of darkest nightmare upon the world, only the intrepid knights of House Eotrus stand in their way. Claradon Eotrus takes up the mantle of his noble house to avenge his father and hold back the tide of chaos that threatens to engulf the world and destroy mankind. Claradon recruits Angle Theta and Gabriel Garn, mysterious knights of mystical power to stand with him. Theta and Garn take up their swords one last time against the coming darkness - a darkness from which only one will emerge.

'The Gateway' is the first story in the Harbinger of Doom saga. The epic tale continues in 'The Fallen Angle'. The book, 'Harbinger of Doom' collects The Gateway and The Fallen Angle into a single volume and is available in Kindle and Trade Paperback formats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fantasy, May 6, 2008
By Connie Brady (New York StateUSA) - See all my reviews
--- I've read The Gateway and its sequel, The Fallen Angle, a while back. I would say that the Harbinger of Doom series is becoming one of my all-time favorites. This book is just that good. The author doesn't just spit out a story here - he's crafted every line and word - there's a rhythm to the way it reads; both the exposition and the dialog. It draws you in; providing a more immersive experience than you'd expect in fantasy fiction. The underlying ambiguity as to who's really the hero and who's really the villain make this story a true standout. I liked it so much, I actually read it twice - and found that on the second read I picked up all sorts of subtleties and nuances that I'd missed on the first go round.

The negative review someone posted for this book says that the dialog is juvenile and there's not much character development. Whether you like the author's writing style (which does focus much more on action than on detailed descriptions of character's thoughts and feelings) there's no denying that the book is rich in language, and the dialog is realistic and often witty. To suggest that this is a kid's book, or that the writing is simplistic is just factually wrong.
Here's a couple of lines from the first page: "With the mist came a thunderous cacophony that consumed the night, piercing the very souls of those unfortunates within its demesne. A malificient, skirling, bestial sound, akin to naught in nature and much in nightmare. A preternatural wailing it was, and in its wake bounded death." If that sounds like a children's book to you, I guess you should pass this book by. If you like old-style sword & sorcery - like the stuff Robert Howard or Lin Carter wrote, you'll probably love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Riveting Fantasy Saga, May 29, 2008
By Fantasy geek (N.Y, New York) - See all my reviews
This book is highly recommended to anyone that is interested in adventures set in the medevial period. The stories depict a battle between humans vs dark and hideous monster like villians that entered the earth's realm through a mysterious portal. Their sole purpose is to create havoc and the destruction of the human kind.

The author draws you into the story with detailed and graphic descriptions of the surroundings and events. The fighting scenes are so well described that the events become very vivid in your mind, transporting you through time.

The main character seem to be Angle Theta, a very mysterious individual with combating skills beyond the imagination. In stories of this type, the battle is usually between good and evil where the hero represents good. However, the line between good and evil is very blurred in this story. Events and decisions makes you question the morality of individuals.

The author seems to suggest that the main characters and stories are based on actual events. Regardless if this is true or not, the book is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Gateway, August 23, 2009
By Pamela Stewart (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I honestly have no idea why anyone rated this book as anything higher than a zero. Having read the other two reviews, I started reading with great anticipation. I found the characters poorly developed, a strange mixture of language styles (modern slang mixed in with thees and thys). The dialogue was juvenile at best - I felt as if I were listening to 13 year olds squabbling rather than adults weighing a serious situation. I read the whole book waiting for it to get better, but it never did. If you are looking for a really good series of books set in a medieval period, I highly recommend THE ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE.
