From the Manufacturer

MartinLogan - The Great American Speaker Company

The Source (shown here in black)
perfectly complements any home theater

Source: World Class Performance at an Exceptional Price

Source is a hybrid design descended from Martinlogan's legendary, ultra-performing enthusiast models. It represents a remarkable achievement in performance at a previously unheard of low price for such a handcrafted product.

Source is an elegant, compact floor standing beauty that does it all. Combining the latest version of MartinLogan's unique "see-through" electrostatic panel (the world's most accurate method of sound reproduction) with a deep bass woofer cone in a clean lined cabinet, Source mates ideally with nearly any of your electronics, for any use.

Beyond delivering stunning, accurate play back of all types of stereo music, or incorporated as the star in your 5.1 or 7.1 home theater playing film soundtracks, Source will look great in your entertainment space and provide years of performance and pride because of its renowned MartinLogan design and construction. Best of all is the low cost--the Source allows you to get the superior build quality and truly exceptional sound of more expensive electrostats for a very affordable price.

For 25 years MartinLogan has led the speaker building world in refining what experts acknowledge as the most accurate sound reproducing technology - a way of recreating sound that has been known since the dawn of audio recording and replay. The basic story is one of simply harnessing a force of nature, the world of charged particles. In their Lawrence, Kansas factory MartinLogan builds perforated, curved steel panels (stators) which are precisely insulated. They sandwich an ultra light weight membrane (diaphragm) of highly advanced, specifically treated film. When the signal from your receiver comes through these voltage charged, elegant structures, the experience you receive is simply magical. Decades of research have allowed ML to bring forth these nearly indestructible, see-through panels with the ability to reproduce exactly every detail of sound, in your room as it was originally reordered.

Electrostat panels ensure ultimate clarity in an eye-pleasing, open air design

Under the Hood: The Benefits of Electrostatic Panels

What Is a CLS (Curvilinear Line Source) Electrostatic Panel?
Innovative manufacturing techniques and relentless research enabled MartinLogan to produce the original Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) panels, the first wide-range electrostatic drivers to deliver good horizontal sound dispersion without sacrificing overall sound quality or reliability. CLS Generation 2 builds on that success with advanced diaphragm and stator technologies that significantly enhance speaker efficiency and dynamics.

Their new thin-film plasma-deposition process applies an improved conductive coating to the ultra-low-mass PET (polyethylene terathylate) diaphragm for superior adhesion and abrasion resistance, as well as a better impedance characteristic. MicroPerf stators expose more of the diaphragm surface, dramatically expanding effective radiating area without increasing panel size, while ClearSpar spacers help maintain their stiffness without impairing the signature transparent look of MartinLogan electrostats. Many folks fall in love with MartinLogans on the strength of their stunning architectural appearance alone.

Source's electrostatic panels are assembled and secured to their cabinets using MartinLogan's new AirFrame technology. AirFrames, manufactured from aerospace-grade billet and extruded aluminum alloy, make the panels extremely rigid without obstructing playable surface area or interfering with their dipole sound radiation. At the same time, they provide electrical and acoustical isolation, minimizing intermodulation distortion caused by vibration and resonance. Overall, AirFrames enhance imaging, low-level sonic detail, accuracy, and efficiency.

The Clarity of MicroPerf Stators
Although stators are the elements of an electrostatic driver that are supposed to stand still, they carry the audio signals that do the work of propelling the diaphragm back and forth to move air and produce sound. Because the stators sandwich the diaphragm between them, they must be perforated to allow sound to pass through. Yet they must also be rigid enough to remain absolutely stationary despite the strong electrostatic forces pushing and pulling at them during operation.

To control rotation: Click on image, hold down button, and move mouse

MartinLogan's new, updated MicroPerf design optimizes this tradeoff by reducing the size of the individual holes and using many more of them than in the former version. MicroPerf almost doubles effective diaphragm radiating area without compromising structural integrity. The resulting increase in output capability and efficiency allows a panel to be made much smaller without sacrificing performance - or to enjoy a substantial leap in bandwidth and dynamics without growing larger. You get a cool look without over-dominating the rest of the room's decor.

Dipole Sound Radiation
The sound we hear from a loudspeaker is a combination of direct radiation from it to our ears and reflections off of room surfaces - walls, floor, and ceiling. How our brains integrate all this information is far from simple. Depending on the angle of incidence to the ears and the arrival-time difference between direct and reflected sound, reflections can either blur detail and stereo imaging or enhance the natural impression of depth and openness.

True dipole speakers, such as Martinlogan electrostatic panels, have long been noted for their near-ideal radiation patterns. They send very little sound to the sides, thereby minimizing side-wall reflections with short arrival times that tend to interfere with perception of the direct sound. Their strong rear radiation, however, produces a generous amount of ambience-enriching later-arriving reflections off the wall behind them. Add in MartinLogan's world famous curvature resulting in controlled dispersion, you get the benefit of taking even the most problematic room out of the equation so that you can enjoy nearly perfect playback.

High-rigidity woofers mean clean, tight bass

High-Quality Woofers and Crossovers

High - Rigidity, High Excursion Woofer

You'll get frighteningly realistic explosions along with "at the symphony hall" replications of the deepest kettle drum.

Vojtko Crossover
Carefully hand-built using only the finest custom wound audio transformer and air-core coils, the crossover employ's MartinLogan's proprietary Vojtko topology for vanishingly low distortion and seamless driver integration. This precision-tuned network preserves even the most subtle sonic nuances while handling the full dynamics of any source. You'll swear the musicians are right there in your room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audiophile quality and great looks at low end prices!, May 17, 2009
Let me confess first - I own Aeon I (and before that Aries 2) speakers for the last several years and I swear by Martin Logan speakers; I do not own this particular Source SE but have heard this in Magnolia Hi-Fi a couple of times.

That said, Martin Logan electrostatic speakers are a class by themselves - known for music hi-fidelity, the best soundstage you can get for the money. You can hear details and small things that you never heard before using other speakers. For e.g. I hear the small sound made by the violinist while pressing the chords with a finger in some recordings. Beware if you have bad recordings!

The ML speakers usually require high current at low impedance (typically 4 ohms) that are only supported by some of the mid range or high end receivers (Denon AVR-3808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver with Networking or above is a good bet; for audiophile quality, may be you can try such brands as Classe, McIntosh, Adcom etc.).
But Source and Source SE can manage with lower end receivers (from the spec the nominal impedance is 5 or 6 ohms that are usually supported by a 500$ range receivers today).
Another thing to be said about ML's electrostatic speakers - placement of speakers in the room - does make big difference to the soundstage - and so where you sit might matter too.
All things considered, once you have this set up, put in a good classical music and you are in audiophile heaven! I wouldn't trade Martin Logans for any other speaker...they are a lifetime investment.
These are one of the low end of Martin Logan's lineup but still good enough to have the Martin Logan label!
UPDATE: Checked denon's website on the current generation of Denon receivers and it looks like the lowest end of Denon receivers - Denon AVR-589 375-Watt 5.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver support 6 Ohms easily and so they can support this speaker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great speaker for the money, May 17, 2009
By Timothy Lam "trustedsince1996" (Temple City, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First off, I would like to preface by saying I am a long-time Bose owners and fan, whose product people either love them or hate them. Martin Logan is the same way in many ways, people either love how they look or sound or think they look ugly or the electrostatic speakers sound 'thin'. I think this is because of three main reasons:

The optimal sound field or sweet spot where the ML electrostatic speakers sound their best are generally smaller than conventional speakers, so placement is critical.

Secondly, the power amp selection is very important, you need something beefy to drive them. I have used an Onkyo TX-SR875 and it worked fine, of course the Onkyo 905/906 are even better! I also heard many people used Denon AVR-3808 to drive them without any problem. If you don't want to worry about this, then you can always get the more expensive ML Purity speaker with built-in amp, just provide the source, could just be an iPod and you are ready to listen, no amp/receiver required. Personally, I would save the extra cost for a good amp or receiver to power these speakers.

Third, I found ML break-in period tends to be longer, Mine required 200 hours to sound their best.

Bottomline is if your price range is $1000 per speaker, this is a no-brainer, get a pair and pair them with a good strong amp/receiver and you won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to new kind of speaker, July 21, 2008
By Sandrine Soderberg (Sacramento, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great introduction to a whole new way of listening. I can't believe how this sounds much more like people in the room playing music for me versus sound obviously coming out of a box. Details, vocals, I have never heard before or was too blurred to make out just snapped into place as if it was always there. At first it was strange as I have used conventional speakers for years as these just diappeared and a whole stage opened in front of me. I had been told by fiends (guys) who had more experience that this type would be hard, but my Denon powers them nicely and the instructions are the most detailed of any before it. It was worth the extra few minutes it took to set up correctly with the result being so much more than anything else I have tried in the past. A must hear.
