From the Manufacturer

Onkyo's TX-SR876B A/V Home Network Receiver: Already Impressive High-Def Legacy with HQV Video Processing and ISF Video Calibration

Based on a winning design for high-definition home theater reproduction, the TX-SR876 is a comprehensive A/V processing "hub" with a deep reservoir of amplification power to draw on. Reveling in its new THX Ultra2 Plus certification, the TX-SR876 shows its class with a broad range of capabilities, phenomenal performance, and noticeable finesse. With its advanced HQV Reon-VX video processing--and supreme high-definition surround sound decoding, this receiver belongs in elite company. This receiver features 4 x HDMI 1.3a inputs, high-definition audio decoding of DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD, and video upscaling to 1080p, using it's built-in Silicon Optix HQV Reon-VX chipset. It's also one of the first receivers anywhere to employ ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) video calibration. From whatever movie, music, broadcast, or gaming source you choose, the TX-SR876 will impress time and time again.

Superior Audio Sound

The TX-SR876 has 9 audio inputs and 2 audio outputs
Each of the seven equal power amplifier channels features 140 watts of output, able to drive the widest variety of home theater speaker systems. The TX-SR876 also features Audyssey MultEQ in-room multi-point analysis that measures the in-room response at up to six different listening positions, and then fine-tunes the response for the smoothest, most natural-sounding tonal balance. And, the TX-SR876 is among the first to include Audyssey's remarkable new Dynamic Volume processing, which eliminates jarring volume shifts between TV shows and commercials, as well as Audyssey Dynamic EQ to ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance, even at low volume levels.

With an overall frequency response of 5 Hz to 100 kHz and Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-Bit audio DACs (PCM1796) for all channels, you will be able to feel the sound as well as hear it. The TX-SR876 comes with three TI 32-Bit DSP chips for advanced processing, bi-amping and BTL capability for enhanced music and movie sound effects. It also comes with Audyssey MultEQ XT to correct room acoustic problems and to calibrate speakers. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is included for loudness correction. Audyssey Dynamic Volume makes for optimal listening level and dynamic range VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) for all channels.

Multi-Room Capable

The TX-SR876 comes with powered zone 2 (audio and video), zone 2 and zone 3 pre-outs, independent control for volume, balance (zone 2 and zone 3) and bass/treble (zone 2 only). There is no loss of control or quality in the second and third zone.

  • The TX-8555B: Forget about over-hyped processing technologies. If your receiver lacks the fundamental amplifier design from the power supply through to the output stage, everything else is superfluous. The TX-8555 stereo receiver is built with this in mind. Incorporating Onkyo's proprietary Wide Range Amplifier Design (WRAT) with an isolated power transformer and discrete output stage, the TX-8555 is focused on maintaining the purity of music, radio and video sources.
  • The TX-8255B: While new technologies come and go, the fundamentals of competent receiver design remain constant. You can never underestimate the importance of the power supply, and all other audio processing functions cannot rule over good solid amplification. This is the direction Onkyo has taken with the TX-8255 stereo receiver. Built for those people who value the benefits of time-proven amplification design, the TX-8255 takes core Onkyo technology--and an array of features you'll actually use--to bring you a no-nonsense stereo receiver that will deliver audio and radio signals with agreeable quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding performer....., January 6, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I have had this receiver for several weeks now. I was a little leary about purchasing this unit as it was being used in a room that does "double-duty" of being a place where I listen to high-end analog and digital music along with occasional use of a home-theatre. The primary purpose is music reproduction and I was tempted to go with tube-style amps and other gear in support of my vinyl record collection. But since there are always compromises in this area (space, money, etc) I decided to take a chance with this Onkyo. All I can say is WOW. I run 5.1 channels with bi-amplification on the front speakers (my one concession to music versus video). The sound reproduction is excellent. I have done a lot of comparison shopping and looked at a lot of different systems and I would have had to spend over $4-5K on hybrid tube amps to get sound better than this.

In terms of home theater, it is even better. It performs as advertised. Set-up was a breeze and the audessy is a pleasure to use and instantly "balanced" my room. For home theater use, it is incredible. Ground-shaking lows, booming sound when appropriate yet the most subtle sounds (such as dialogue at a low level) is outstanding. Some reviewers complain about it running hot. I have mine outside of any cabinet (top shelf of a component stand) and have run it for hours at 75-80% of max volume with no problems.

My two complaints are: The remote as the buttons are a bit hard to read in dim light (even with the back-lighting) and it only has 3 digital optical inputs. Given I use seperate CD and DVD players, along with a Laser Disc and other digital sources, I had to use the alternate digital cable connects. Not a big deal, I just expected more digital optical inputs.

In summary, if you are looking for a leading-edge video processing unit that has outastanding home-theater characterstics at a low price, then this is definitely it. Throw in the fact that it processes music far beyond the expectations one would have for solid-state receiver (especially at this price point) and you really have a great unit.

If you do decide to buy this, please note the dimensions and weight. This is a large, heavy receiver. And given the heat concerns of other posters, I would make sure it has plenty of "breathing room".

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this unit, December 27, 2008
This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
Shipped from OneCall, packaged nicely. Built very solidly, as all Onkyo AVR's have been that I've purchased. Overall, very happy with the quality. Be aware that in order to use the Powered Zone 2, you must have analog input for the device(s) you wish to listen to. (For example, I want to listen to my AppleTV which has my iTunes library on it outside by the pool. Even though I connected it to the Onkyo 876 via HDMI for the best quality picture and sound in the main living room, I still had to connect the two with standard RCA audio cables as well in order to listen in Zone 2. Not a big deal, but not necessarily intuitive given the huge capabilities of this unit. Don't let it discourage you.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Great sound while it lasted. Center channel failed after 46 days, April 7, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I bought this unit (SR 876 B) having read horror stories of 806 and blue dot issues.
Unit had burr and brown DACs like 805 which was the last bench mark.
Unit arrived in great shape from amazon. Worked excellently for 46 days.
Just past the 30day limit on almost any return policy period the center channel started making a periodic sound. It was mixed in with whatever was being played through the center channel. The sound was pink noise of duration 15-20seconds then repeating every other minute. It was loud enough not to be bearable.

Called onkyo support. They were very unhelpful. They seemed to make it an owner/user error to an amp error. Like robots - they request the customer to reset the unit. Like that will help a bug in the analong section (most likely a failed capacitor).

Unit ran very hot when used.

Onkyo support requested me to call amazon and arrange for a return. Amazon support was very helpful - however was not able to arrange for an replacement. Waiting to see if I can complete a return.

Now the price of the unit has shot up. No choice but too look for another brand.
