Product Description

Product Description
The Kubotan (sometimes erroneously spelled as Kubaton or Kobutan) self-defense keychain, is a close-quarter self-defense weapon developed by Soke Takayuki Kubota. It is essentially a derivation of the Yawara stick. Attached with a keyring for convenience and concealment, the kubotan appears as an innocuous key fob to the untrained eye. Aside from its size and shape, much of its usage is quite similar to the Yawara stick. As with the Yawara stick, the principal areas for attacks in self-defense include bony, fleshy and nerve targets such as knuckles, forearms, bridge of the nose, shins, stomach, solar plexus, spine, temple, ribs, groin, neck, eyes etc. The Kubotan is usually held in either an icepick (for hammerfist strikes) or forward grip (for stabbing and pressure point attacks). Common uses include hardening the fist (fistload) for punching, attacking vulnerable parts of an assailant's body, and gaining leverage on an assailant's wrist, fingers and joints. With keys attached, it can also function as a flailing weapon. Its techniques are greatly linked to 'empty handed' martial arts techniques, and almost all of its uses can complement the fighting style in which it is included. It is a weapon that can adapt to an art, rather than just dictate its own set of movements and uses. The use of the Kubotan (and similar weapons like its predecessors the Yawara stick and the Koppo stick) makes it a particularly interesting weapon because improvised versions can be readily found and can be equally effective. Since a Kubotan is just a rod of plastic, metal or wood, any restrictive regulation would most likely be ambiguous and undefined due to the ability for any rod-shaped item to essentially be used in kubotan-like fashion. This property makes it one of the few weapons that can be replaced by everyday items, whilst retaining all its combative properties. In the United States, Kubotans are still widely unregulated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Alternative Weapon But..., March 11, 2007
By D. Nguyen "Goju Guy" (Round Rock, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a fine weapon for the average citizen who is not inclined to carry a knife or handgun, but it cannot be as effective as a cane or a police baton, two other alternatives to consider. The cane is perhaps the most innocent seeming yet it has reach advantages over the kubotan and will deal a most damaging strike.

The above review is a good one, but please ignore the advice about sharpening keys and using the kubotan as a flail. This is unlikely to provide any real stopping power to a determined attacker. The kubotan excels as a loadfist weapon, so use it to enhance your hammerfist and punch strikes. You can also use the point to 'stab' your attacker's body points and bony targets like the back of the hand can be excruciatingly painful when struck. In other words use the kubotan like it was intended to do so. Nowhere in any traditional yawara training is it used like a mini-flail like the above poster suggested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kubotan, A Reliable Tag Team Partner, April 21, 2009
This is one of those self defense tools that you hope you don't have to use, but is still great to carry around. I recieved my kubotan earlier than Amazon predicted, and it came as it was described. It is great to have the kubotan because now I have a reliable tool that won't instantly kill or seriously hurt somebody. It is a pain compliance tool that is used to strike or apply pressure on body parts, hard or soft, and I feel safe having the kubotan with me all the time. I would definately recommend to anyone that they buy the kubotan for self defense needs, you won't regret doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Durable and Helpful, December 10, 2007
Wrap your hands around this and you know that you have, in some way or another, an upperhand when your safety is put at stake. I literaly can say my friends still in practice of many different forms of martial arts are afraid of his helpful hunk of metal. It's a good size, fits in your back pocket front pocket, anywhere. I carry it next to my wallet, it's perfect honestly. The fist this creates is powerful and with a little boxing technique you can land it on all the boney areas that it works best in. This is not a product just for women, infact, I feel they should target men more, it's obviously a good product otherwise I wouldn't keep ranting about it. The rounded end seems sharp in the picture, it is not sharp, but affective, makes a centered area of imapact which would work great if attacked from behind, quick powerful jabs to the eyes, the ribs, the neck, kneecaps, and even holding it opposite in such situations still keep the kubaton helpful. Trust me when I say, it's a good addition to your everyday grab and go things for your pocket. And also, don't bother with the key ring, it's practical for carrying but why would you want a flail if you are in danger of real problems, I doubt that a few mm of sharpness will hurt.
